RPI Hockey 2014-2015 Part II: Dedicated to Rich Curadi

The "WaP indicator" worked again: not a single loss all season when we scored three or more goals.

(not a single victory all season when we scored two or fewer goals).

So our objective next weekend is at least three goals in each of two games.

Actually, the indicator said that we were 9-0-2 when we gave up two goals or less and 0-23-0 when giving up three or more. So with a win and a tie this weekend, now we are 1-23-1 since we gave up three goals in both games.

Re: RPI Hockey 2014-2015 Part II: Dedicated to Rich Curadi

I don't think we lose much on offense with the outgoing seniors. But the defense is going to be much different. Curadi and Leonard both played defense first. Guys like Prapavessis and Bell look like offensive threats. This years system seemed to encourage the defensemen joining the play. The new guys look very talented especially Praps, I look forward to watching him for the next three years.
On offense, I can only hope that we find a couple of offensively talented people to play with Bourbonnais. I really felt that he was held back by his linemates this year.
As for recruits, I gave up trying to project their talents after watching Laliberte. He was just an ok player for us for four years, and I expected so much more.
In goal, we are going to need a rejuvenated Kasdorf. If he doesn't return to form, we may be in big trouble.

Just a quick thought about JL. I expected a bit more scoring, but he has the style of game that he needs scorers around him to set up-and he never really had that chance. Give him Pirri and D'Amigo or someone who can put 25 in the net and his numbers would have been far more impressive. And remember in his class he was the highest scorer in both goals and total points so i would perhaps rate him as the best forward of his group while at RPI. You cannot do it alone in hockey. We have had some of the lowest scoring offenses in RPI history over the past few years so i am not sure we could have seen much higher numbers from anyone.

Not to nit-pick your point, but I think Ryan Haggerty would still count for this class, and he has more goals than Lally. But you bring up a good point. JL does not have any skills that jump out to you when watching him except maybe his ability to pass the puck. That type of player absolutely needs finishers around them to rack up points.

Re: RPI Hockey 2014-2015 Part II: Dedicated to Rich Curadi

I for one am hopeful to see the team from last night playing at Clarkson next weekend. The team had some fight in them, and showed some passion and swagger. Drew's celebration to the stands in his first goal of the game last night (tying the score 2-2) was reminiscent of when Jerry & Brandon were around. I absolutely loved Diebold's celebration 'holster and salute' at the end.

We seem to have found the scoring bug, right at the end of the season. Good timing? :)

ROFL never noticed the Diebold thing. In case anyone wanted to see it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OH9p9S5VjGs

Re: RPI Hockey 2014-2015 Part II: Dedicated to Rich Curadi

I heard them mention on a hot mic on RPI-TV that they would, so that sucks they changed their mind.

I don't think it was decided until post game. I was talking to officers immediately after the game and they gave no indication that they wouldn't be going. It wasn't until almost midnight that an email went out saying the trip was cancelled.

Of course-add Haggerty back for this year and JL gets a bunch more points also. I look at this as a true team sport and all the cogs have to fit. Only the goalie is on th eice for 60 minutes so every line and each defense pairing has to do their job. If everyone on this team the past 4 years amassed 30 goals and 80 points we would be talking about a very successful group.

They looked like they were having fun last night, and seeing Diebold get the win in his last home game was special. It felt good walking out of HFH last night, ending the regular season with a home win, after some tough losing streaks. Hopefully we keep the momentum going into next weekend. If they play like they did last night, who knows?

Jenny and i saw DM play for over 3 years, perhaps 25 times. he just opens up the ice with his speed as every team has to protect against him rushing up ice. He can back up and pester a defense with the best of them. He gets one or two steps on a team and he is just gone and there are very few college level players who can catch him. I have not followed our incoming recruits for next year and defer to Ralph and Turk for information but would love to see one or two more with that speed to join him on the ice. And of course as i always ask for, give me a couple of big power forwards and a couple twin towers for defense.

Fornaris may not have breakaway speed but is fast. Tironese does have breakaway speed (probably not in Drew’s class though) and he has a nasty edge in his game. Although I wouldn’t break up the MNM line next year but when Hayhurst arrives......look out! I often talk with a player from the Wellington Dukes and he’s told me Hayhurst is one of the fastest skaters he’s seen....WITH THE PUCK! He’s also been very, very impressed by Wiffen. Think Zalewski with speed and more scoring ability. Babo appreciated the hello from you & Jenny Doc. She very much loves the friendship she’s received from you both. Before the start of the 3rd we shared our Van Gogh & raised a toast to Rich & friendship. BTW, the fedora that Luke wore during the ceremony was his Dad’s favorite hat so Luke wore it in honor of him.

Babo, Loved Rich's hat. What a great Senior Night! Bring the hat to Potsdam. It's not superstitious, just very fitting.

Doc maybe you can scout out another Melanson or two. and while you're at it find Hammond & Pothier clones

Who knows, indeed!

I'm glad they are playing Clarkson... I like it that they had to win on the last night to earn the trip to Potsdam... Despite our earning 1 point v Clarkson and 3 points v Cornell, I think we match up well with the Green and our speed creates some matchup problems for them. (Let Union enjoy the trip to Ithaca.) It's a new season and we have some players. LGR!

I wondered about that hat.

The need for speed. Say, that nastiness reference to Tironese's game, while it remains to be seen, I wonder if we're talking Bruce Coles nastiness. (I wouldn't mind.)

I don't think that he has Bruce Coles nastiness.

Personally I think that we should reserve judgment on any of the recruits until they get here. NCAA hockey is different from what they have seen. From past experience some turn out a lot better than predicted, and some a lot worse. Hockey is a team game, and with different teammates they are going to produce differently.

Upon rereading what I just wrote, I should probably say that I should reserve judgment. Turk181 may be a much better talent evaluator than I am, and I also defer to his contact.

No, you’re 100% correct RB. The size & speed will be much different for all these recruits at the D1 level. How they mature into it we’ll just have to wait and see. I might add, how the coaches use each player will be somewhat of a factor.

It's amazing what one penalty shot can do for the morale in here. We lose that game in OT or even tie and the talk in here would be counting down the days to our being swept in Potsdam or Ithaca. Love the enthusiasm and hope to see it on the ice on Friday night.
