RPI Engineers 2017-2018

Re: RPI Engineers 2017-2018

Critical weekend for both RPI and Union with respect to playoff hopes. A sweep by either team would be huge. Based on recent performance it looks like Union has an edge in offensive talent and RPI an edge in goaltending. A split would be a safe call. I can't see RPI sweeping unless Selander is outstanding or gets a lot more help from RPI goal production than what we have seen recently.

Re: RPI Engineers 2017-2018

I hadn't checked in a couple of weeks, but the first incoming player is now in the directory:

Delaney Weiss
FR,
Biomedical Engineering

Re: RPI Engineers 2017-2018

I had a bad feeling about this game even before watching it. Evenly played game, but I have to admit that Union looks like the better team right now. The only time that RPI looked dangerous was when they were short-handed....not sure what that says about the team.

As someone who has watched these two teams over many years, I find it striking how much the character of the teams have reversed this year. It used to be that RPI was a very free-wheeling, fast and creative team that often came up short even when they controlled the play, while Union relied on goaltending and defence and looked like their objective was to try to win 1-0. This year, the roles seem reversed: Union is a better skating team than RPI and more dangerous offensively, while RPI looks slow, cautious and overly dependent on their goalie to bail them out.

A split it was, with each team coming away with a 2-1 win. Unfortunately Yale came up with 4 pts on the weekend and Harvard got 2, so playoff hopes for both RPI and Union became more challenging. With 6 games left RPI is 3 pts behind Harvard and Princeton and 4 pts behind Yale. Union is 4 and 5 pts back. RPI still have a game to play against each of Princeton and Harvard and will have to come up with wins in those games and hope that travel partner Union does also. RPI and Union should be each others' biggest fans from this point on, but maybe that's asking a lot. :)

You really felt, saw and believe that RPI used to be a free wheeling team?

Glad you said it first. Don't think they were ever anything of that nature. Don't think John knew how to instill that type of attitude (or much of anything else positive) into the mindset of his players. His teams every year were boring and without much personality (I almost said lifeless), just like him. Coincidence?! I don't think so.

We kind of blew it. Not only did we not pull the 3-4 points that we really needed to stay viable for the playoffs, but Yale was able to earn 4 points and really bury us. Buuuut, we're at home this weekend, so let's shock the world and pull down the four points against Princeton and Quinnipiac. That wouldn't guarantee us a playoff spot, but it would almost definitely push us back into the top 8. We will need at least 3 wins in our last 6 games, but I believe in us.

Re: RPI Engineers 2017-2018

Hey Lugnut92, just a question for you based on geography, (your profile has you in New Haven) have you heard any rumblings about Sacred Heart joining a league and shedding the independent status? The CHA seems a viable option. With the consortium breaking down and Holy Cross joining Hockey East scheduling games may be a challenge for SHU. I know the program is kind of the step-child of D1 but all indications are that they are recruiting better players and hope to be more competitive next season.

I have no idea, sorry.

Re: RPI Engineers 2017-2018

These are tough times for RPI hockey. Both the men's and women's teams went down to shutout losses today. The women's team now has an average goal production of about 1 1/2 goals per game. I haven't done a careful check of the historical record but I think that it is safe to say that never before in RPI hockey history have we seen such a dismal combined record of the two teams. RPI has a proud hockey history and this sport is king (and queen) on campus, as the only D1 sport for the institution. But I worry that the flame of RPI hockey pride is flickering.

Both teams have new coaches this year, and so far, their impact is unimpressive. But fans need to keep in mind that they are both working with teams inherited from their predecessors and it is too soon to pass judgement. Cold comfort, I know, in these tough times, but both coaches deserve the benefit of the doubt and the players deserve continued support. After all, it is still entertaining hockey, at least for fanatics like me.

Probably only for a fan like you. I would never have used the word entertaining to describe RPI women's hockey. I would have said things like boring, sloppy, uninspired, unmotivated, unimpressive, without direction and intention, frustrating, unrealized potential, disappointing, and incredibly poorly coached, just to name a few. Maybe that's just to an overall fan of women's hockey like me. ;) (This is mostly directed to the former coach and his staff over the years)

Oh but I do (must be sort of self-imposed punishment). That's why I'd say frustrating and uninspired/unimpressive are the terms that best fit the previous coach and his efforts behind the bench. Nice try though. Now that I really think about it, you might have something there. Maybe I should stop watching and following them at all. It would certainly have saved me a ton of aggrevation all these years. Instead I chose to watch and hope for better days ahead, and that's what I still hope for all the players. They deserve to be well coached for a change and who knows what could happen after that! I'll give this new guy a couple of years to show his stuff. I certainly got my wish after several years of stating my opinion about the inabilities of the previous coach and how the program was doomed under his watch. Now it's a fresh start for everyone, but the new coach better have a positive impact pretty quick, as in a couple of recruiting years. It won't take long to see if there is cause for hope or not.

Gotta love hockey! In 24 hrs, climbing out of the depths of despair :). The men's team gets up off the mat and beats #1 Cornell. The women beat Princeton to keep their playoff hopes alive (need to sweep next weekend at Dartmouth and Harvard, 'though).

Hey, we got a win! We're still alive! That said, it's another weekend of must-win games as we head to New England to take on Dartmouth and Harvard. We really need at least three points.

14 is RPI 2019 recruit Julia Blitz. The picture was apparently taken by her father. The article is in large part about Olympian Haley Skarupa who was a teammate on the Washington Pride of Alexa Gruschow.

So...if we are to believe you Shelfit...you have been nothing but bored by RPI hockey for many years and yet you have been watching their games regularly! It must suck to be you. And now you are already anticipating jumping on the new coach if he doesn't produce results in a couple years. And you expect us to believe that you will be watching the games all along the way. Your silly vendetta is just far too transparent...give it up. You don't watch the games, troll.
