RPI @ Cornell (Saturday, 25 February 2012)

Re: RPI @ Cornell (Saturday, 25 February 2012)

Seth is just been looking for the "hot goalie" all season long to carry this team into the playoffs. No offense to Diebold, who was spectacular last night, but Merriam has proven himself well on the road recently (remember he was the ECAC goalie of the week for the Yale-Brown series) and he did play very well in the Cornell game at HFH. Cornell has a lot more to play for tonight than RPI, and SA must feel that Bryce gives them the best chance to win.

An RPI win could benefit Union more than it benefits RPI. With that going, it's hard to decide what outcome I prefer.. :D

lineup http://www.rpiathletics.com/documents/2012/2/25/2011-12MHKYLineChart_atCOR.pdf?id=1221.

Koudys and Burgdoerfer in for Dolan and AAG.

Edit: and Merriam in goal.

Not as enthused with tonight's line up as I was with last night's. Like the AAG/Malchuk chemistry. Not sure that line fits well tonight and our 4th line played a few very good defensive games this year. Defensively I sure hope the rest has made Koudys ready to play one of his best games. maybe i can understand the rationale for not playing Diebold a second game in a row-but it sure sounded like he played a super game last night and I have always felt you ride the horse that is winning. But other things may be involved in the decision and will wait for the interview with coach SA and listen to his reasoning.

If Brown can beat Princeton -and it is 0-0 right now as I type this-a win over Cornell gives us 10th place I believe. I know we are an incredible long shot in the playoffs but I sure would want the highest seed we could reach. With any sort of upsets we could get into the second round and not have to play the first seed which is often a nice thing. As far as helping Union-they have done enough to be fighting for first-but they did not handle Cornall when they had to. And if they run into a Colgate team that has it all going tonight, the result with Cornell will not matter much.

I didn't realize that we will know the Brown-Princeton result before we play. That will make rooting interests easier.

Ah, yes - RPI game. Where there are already 15 messages 6 hours before game time. I'm going to have to get some reading glasses to make it through the thread tonight! :)
The best thing about the RPI game is we know that if (when) Redcast craps out, WRPI always has a great broadcast -- IMHO the best in the conference.

Re: RPI @ Cornell (Saturday, 25 February 2012)

Sounded very much though that for one of the few times this season-we actually had a plan on how to limit the chances for their top line. Whatever we did, it seemed to work and it seemed that all game long we were adapting to what Colgate was doing. That is the kind of game we must be able to play and especially against teams that have such a dominating line. Now we need a plan that is entirely different tonight-this is a different challenge.
I've been watching this Cornell team all year and I have no idea what a good or bad plan is against them, they are close to random. I'd have said trading power plays was a good plan given that the Red pp is mediocre and their kill has been atrocious, but then last night they looked like the 1978 Montreal Canadians on the kill.

Falling behind in the third also appears to be a pretty good gambit against Cornell this year.

I would not recommend shadowing our two best playmakers (Ferlin and Esposito), since they will both be in the stands.

May the homier team win. ;)

I must clean my glasses. I read that as "May the hornier team win". :D ;)

Attention anyone that has picked Ferlin (cnor, RPIHFH, TuteScrooge)... you may change your pick.

Brown was up on Princeton 2-0 with 2 minutes to play. Princeton went empty net-and has now scored twice to tie it. They are in OT now.

Ended as a 2-2 tie and we need a win to overtake Princeton in the standings. Not sure who we would rather face in the first round but it looks like QU or Clarkson.

Guess I would prefer Q-school since they are an up and down team. Also would be a shorter road trip and more RPI fans might make the trip.

Re: RPI @ Cornell (Saturday, 25 February 2012)

For those who keep better track of these things than I do, are there any possible outcomes tonight that result in us facing Harvard next weekend?

I am sure, although he would not admit it, that coach SA would have a favorite to play. I don't think any of the 3 most like scenarios-QU, Clarkson or Yale will be any picnic but we have played fairly well against all 3 and not really been blown out. If we don't shoot ourselves in the foot with penalties we could be competitive in any of those series but certainly should not be favored in any case.

Road trips to Potsdam are rarely good however.

I think I found one:

Colgate, Yale, Cornell, Clarkson win. SLU-Dartmouth tie. #11 RPI at #6 Harvard.
