RPI@Cornell 02/03/23

Update from Hamilton from a friend: Colgate pulled their goalie with an offensive zone faceoff with 2.8 seconds left in the 2nd period. Union won the draw clean and fired it down into an empty net with .3 left.

I probably shouldn't write this with a period to go, but I give the Cornell radio broadcasters kudos for an unbiased broadcast. And they didn't think that Ciccarello has an I at the end.

18:03 SC Colin Kessler (4) ASST: Jakub Kopecky (2), Tyler Hotson (23)

I don't post nearly as much about recruits getting points as I used to. I thought for a while that is because they were scoring less, but it is more due to 13 of 16 either playing on late starting teams in the Mountain and Pacific time zones or for prep schools that I find little info about.

We just couldn't keep up with Cornell 5 on 5.
I don't know if it is lack of talent or just a difficult match up.

Agreed. RPI outskated by a clear margin. Could have been more that 3 goals conceded. I think Cornell is just a better skating team--similar disparity in shots in the game a couple of weeks ago at HFH. The team is also banged-up and that's not helping. RPI also having trouble staying out of the penalty box, which is partly a symptom of being outskated. Miller wasn't bad in goal considering how much traffic there was in front of him. I think a healthy Watson is still the #1, but that was a nice effort from a backup who hasn't seen a lot of time.

The weird thing is that even with the limited shots on goal, RPI created some of the best chances of the game. Mashie and Muzzatti could have both had a goal after really good offensive zone play gave them gilt-edged chances. The Cornell goalie made a nice save from Mashie in the slot, but coughed up a rebound right back to him which he put wide. Strom found Muzzatti uncovered on the far post from the opposite point, but his shot went just wide.
