Re: RPI @ CC Game 2 10/9/10
Spend my money and flew to Colorado (felt like going to Japan for a weekend).
Game 1 -- atrocious officiating that hampered any flow in the game. The Colorado Penalty Box Guy's post about that game is absurd. We were clearly robbed by the referees on the none goal.
Game 2 -- atrocious coaching. The team was lethargic, unprepared and unmotivated. Initially the only forward line that showed energy, created offense, and yes, believe it or not, actually checked somebody, was the Burgdoerfer/Rabbani line (Rabbani with a couple of monster hits -- Burgdoerfer with relentless forechecking). The energy of that line ultimately resulted in a power play (Rabbani coming down the middle and getting chopped down) that energized the rest of the team and led to the tie.
Dr. D., the defense did not play well -- Yorkie played exceptional and bailed out the defense. We have defense men that can't shoot from the blue line (I know, not all of them but some), that are sloppy in the break out and their passing. The defensive play that stood out the most for me was a defense men cross checking a forward behind our net -- an absolute undisciplined and stupid penalty since one can not score from behind the net -- but that player was rewarded with being on the ice again and again.
The power play is virtually non-existent and good things happen by accident -- Pollachek seeing the ice well and delivering an impossible to miss pass to Helfrich for the tip in from a foot or two away from the goal -- but not by design.
The coaches' lack of feeling for the flow of the game is incomprehensible at this level. Why didn't he play the guys that brought energy over the guys that were lethargic? Are their any repercussions for the lack of discipline penalties by the supposed leaders of this team or are they untouchable? Ultimately a team is the reflection of the coaches personality -- in this case I would describe it as unbalanced, unorganized, undisciplined and unfocused.
Obviously, I think that the Athletic Director send the wrong message by extending Appert's contract and rewarding him for underachieving big time last year. But than, Appert does the same thing -- rewarding players with ice time for not producing and committing unnecessary penalties.
Sadly, unless coaching improves dramatically, I think we will be in it for another long painful season.
Cheers everybody.
