RPI @ BU, Sunday 10/5/25

I think I like Lang’s style of play. The BU announcers acted surprised that we have two forwards outside the zone on breakout. It does present a risk, but it also stretches the opposition and creates space for the defenseman to move to open ice and create passing lanes. To often in the past we didn’t trust our defensemen (perhaps with reason) so everyone was packed in the zone. It was crowded so it became a self-fulfilling prophecy as someone would jump the dman and cause a turnover. If we did get it out too often it was a covered forward chipping it out along the boards.

Good breakouts, protecting the crease, responsible defensevely and clearly a much faster team. I know it's early but very encouraging.

You're right as always doc. The passing is much better
Some good things so far. Moving the puck out of the zone a bit better. Offensive zone passing also a bit better than last year. Killed off the only penalty which is a surprise in itself. So far so good. Picture quality has been horrible here with freezes and jumping around but could see most of the period.

Simply not as bad as could have been expected. Actually defended a 5 on 3 without giving a goal up. Sure BU got one PP goal in 4 attempts but I will take that for now. The empty net goal just makes the score board look more one sided. We had an excellent first period and the BU started to show their overall strength and depth. The one thing hard to judge was team speed. For the first period I felt we we kept up well and even out skated BU for periods of time. The rest of the game not so much. Actually quite surprised how well the boys communicated for a very first game.
Will be able to get a better idea next weekend with 2 home games that count against a team that is not nearly BU.

IIRK, you said we were 3.5 goal underdogs. So we beat the spread. :)

A bit amazing how they give odds for the first game of the season, for teams that have not played each other in eons, for a game that means nothing, and almost hit the number on the head? Although not in this case, I wonder even how often an empty net goal at the end is the cause of meeting or beating the spread?

A lot of positives last night. The big one that I saw was they played as a team. At both ends of the ice.
It was impressive that these guys who hardly know each other could mesh so well.
The two negatives were that they seemed to tire in the third period and as usual, no goals.
I look forward to the rest of the season.
