Re: RPI @ Brown 1/29/10
As an eyewitness who saw the penalty that put RPI down two men from less than 20 feet away, I can attest that it was, indeed a penalty- though one that I would probably let go in the final seconds of a tied game, if I were a referee. Any other time in the game, it's a blatant foul, but with a few seconds left and the team already down a man? Eh. Not so much. I like that the refs are willing to be objective about the rules, but it was a bit of a soft penalty to call in that particular situation. Right off the faceoff, the RPI center tied up Brown's center and, using his stick, shoved the Brown guy to the ground while play continued. Certainly a penalty with 6 seconds to go in the first or second periods. Again, however I'd have probably let it go myself given the situation.
That said, I'll take the two points, regardless of how they came!
The second period was one of the best Brown has played all season, and it was partly because RPI let them dictate the game. If you let Brown dictate the game, we will beat you- just ask Princeton and Quinnipiac. However, RPI showed a lot of spirit and tenacity in coming back in the third, as it was Brown's turn to sort of fall asleep.
I was standing next to a pro scout, and I could see on his Brown roster that Harry Zolynierchuk (I still can't spell his name right after three years) and Aaron Volpatti were highlighted. So it was great that Aaron got the game-winning goal.
By the way, I read through the early parts of the thread where some people were commenting on the crowd, and it did fill in on the side where the press box is after the first period. I assume the basketball team must have been getting blown out or something, because a couple hundred students just kind of strolled in at the beginning of the 2nd period. There were also about 50-75 RPI fans sitting on that side. It would seem as though it was empty if you watched it on B2, but as the other side was fairly full, it wasn't a bad crowd for us.
