Just in case anyone thought the dreaded third-period blues were a recent phenomenon at RPI -

50 years and one day ago, on Dec. 7, 1966, Yale visited the Field House in Troy.

It was RPI's fourth game of the season. The highly-touted sophomore line of Dale Watson, Rich Scammell, and Barry Law, which had been largely held in check by Cornell, BU, and Clarkson, had their first big breakout night, as the Engineers took a 7-4 lead after two periods, then added two more goals in the third period for good measure.

And it wasn't enough. Yale won the game, 11-9. :eek:

We did beat Brown and led Yale 2-0 before blowing the game in the final 3 minutes.
Two wins this weekend would put an end to all the negative talk (at least temporarily).
Will be in here tonight. Let's go RED!

Surprised no one brought up the 85 team having a dreaded third period in the championship... Being up 2-0 after 40 and the final being 2-1... Yes, I'm having difficulty writing this with a straight face... just goes to show you can apply anything almost anywhere.

I wouldn't exactly say it was a "dreaded third period". Providence was hardly a slouch. And what you have to remember was that PC had Friday night off while RPI had to survive a 3 OT thriller against UMD. I believe they changed that rule the following season (or maybe shortly thereafter).

You're right that the '66-'67 team had no depth at all. Freshmen, of course, were not eligible for varsity sports at the time. The sophomore class was Garry Kearns' first. Ned Harkness didn't do a lot in his final season as coach to recruit players who would have been seniors in '66-'67, nor did Rube Bjorkman do much in his only season as coach to recruit players who would have been juniors.

As I recall, after some players got injured and at least one was excused because he had to take the GRE the next day, RPI played a game late in the season at Princeton with only 10 or 11 players dressed, and two of those were the goalies. At no time during the game was it possible to have a line change involving all three forwards and both defensemen - somebody always had to pull a double shift.

And some went on academic probation the second semester.
