RPI @ ASU, Saturday, 11/26

Re: RPI @ ASU, Saturday, 11/26

I got here late, but caught the last ten minutes of the second period.
No one looks very impressive tonight.
Still after two periods we are tied.

Lets go red!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: RPI @ ASU, Saturday, 11/26

A popular country music song of years ago was "Oceanfront Property" by George Strait. The chorus of the song goes

"I got some oceanfront property in Arizona
From my front porch you can see the sea
I got some oceanfront property in Arizona
If you'll buy that, I'll throw the Golden Gate in free."

The theme of the song, of course, was that the singer was saying something he couldn't imagine anybody would possibly believe. Oceanfront property in Arizona, of all things.

So here we have RPI playing a hockey game in the Oceanside Arena in Arizona.

Anyone know how this arena got its name? Was it a tongue-in-cheek reference to the George Strait song?

Why is it called Oceanside?

The reason we are called Oceanside Ice Arena is because the original land owner was developing a large sports and entertainment complex in the late 60’s to early 70’s. Just to the south is the still operating Big Surf Waterpark which built the world’s first wave pool in 1969. Until the mid 90’s the lot to the north was Malibu Grand Prix, a go-karting track. In the original plans there was to be a tennis complex called Big Serve in the lot to the west that never materialized. As a matter of fact the original name of the arena was Big Skate in the initially submitted architectural plans. At some point prior to opening the name became Oceanside Ice Arena to fit in with the west coast theme of the development.

Re: RPI @ ASU, Saturday, 11/26

You know things are dull in here when the discussion involves the name of the ASU rink and that's the highlight of the night so far

Re: RPI @ ASU, Saturday, 11/26

Thank you, Ralph.

Strait came out with his song in 1987, while the arena opened in 1974, so evidently there is no connection whatever between the arena's name and the song.

My thoughts too.

Re: RPI @ ASU, Saturday, 11/26

One thing that's certainly been diamond in the rough tonight are the face-offs; won a lot of them, it seems.
