RPI 2026 Off-Season: Please Pardon Our Appearance As We Upgrade This Area

Today is 22 April 2026. There are 165 days until RPI's next game.


This is based upon 4 October 2026 for the start of next season.
 
It's been more than a decade since I last went to a game at the Field House and I suppose there have been many changes since then.

I got an e-mail from the Rensselaer Alumni Association today, including an article about the origin of the Big Red Freakout. The article is accompanied by a picture of RPI players, attired all in red, standing on the blue line with helmets off, apparently in position for the playing of the national anthems.

And they are facing the west end of the Field House.

I just assumed that the national anthems would always be played with the players facing the flags at the end where I remembered them - the east, or what used to be the stage end.

Have they moved the flags to the west end? If so, when was the change made?

When I was in ROTC we used to have the color guard present the flags, which was by marching in on the east end. I think they only changed directions when they created the multi-flag display (one representing every nation on RPI's men's and women's hockey teams) that hangs above Shirley's palace. That must have been at least a decade ago, but my sense of time gets hazier as I get older.

Pretty much when Appert came in. The stage was demolished, Chez Shirley was built, and the international flags went up

Last time I was there was for the Brown playoff series in 2013, and my last previous visit had been quite a long time before that.

I know the band was in its current position in the northeast corner of the seating area, so the stage must have been gone. Guess I just didn't take careful note of where the flags were positioned.

I do remember that I walked into the Field House for the Friday night game and was picking up my ticket at the box office just as RPI was taking the ice for their pregame warmup. I heard a boom-boom-boom-boom from the bass drum and the band struck up the fight song and I said to myself "I am home." It was after I bought my ticket and moved to my seat and saw where the band was that I realized things don't always stay the same.

Maybe I'll make it up to Troy for another game this coming season, if RPI ever gets settled on who will be on the team after all the portal transfers out and in.

We've mentioned it here before, but the bandstand removal coincided with the installation of the semi-permanent temporary ice making system that they were forced to install thanks to Shirley and Lee McElroy ignoring the facility condition of their marquee athletic program.

Once the new mechanical installation is complete, the question remains will they allow the band to return to their rightful throne ?
