RPI 2025 Off-Season: HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One of my hopes for this new era is the return of the RPI Invitational Tournament. It ended in 2010-2011 after an amazing 60 year history and it would be absolutely fantastic to see a return.
It was the oldest in the country when it ended was it not? If we can rekindle interest in the team and get attendance up then maybe they could bring it back - with you on that 100%!

Yes sir - it was the oldest. Time to dig it up and give it life again! We could give out free red plastic horns that make a ton of noise and....oh wait, nevermind.
We never missed the Invitational - had the chance to see 4 great games with teams that rarely if ever came to Troy. Always had a blast.

As much as I felt sad when the Invitational was discontinued, we were having trouble attracting good opponents in later years.
Very true. At the end, they tried different ideas to keep it going, such as moving the Invitational from Christmas week to Thanksgiving weekend, which was a disaster. Also, they were trying to get a sponsor to offset the costs of bringing 3 schools in for the event. Of course, with the students on break, attendance was dropping each year.
My suggestion would be to replace the Mayor’s Cup game with a new RPI Invitational at MVP Arena, bringing in teams from Hockey East, Atlantic Hockey, or an independent team. Or you could just bring in Union to add local interest. Just my 5-cents worth…

That’s a great idea. RPI Invitational at mvp arena. Sounds pretty good

Very true RB... and suspect that that challenge would persist if you reinvigorated it. In terms of exposure and playing quality opponents, I'd rather play in the ice breaker or similar national-ish tourneys.

I like this idea! How about this... RPI and Union could co-host the "Capital District Invitational Tournament" in place of the Mayor's Cup. Invite two other schools and have RPI and Union play other opponents in the first round. If they both advance then they play for bragging rights in the final. Now you'd have two schools hosting two others instead of one school hosting three, and in a modern, centralized venue. Invite Appert and Bennett back to throw out the ceremonial first punch...
