I think not only his success at bringing in and coaching kids at AIC but his substantially upgrading recruiting at West Point says a TON. If we think recruiting kids to RPI is a challenge, imagine the hurdles you face in signing a kid to a service academy.... certainly a far smaller pool of talented kids who would even consider that. Bottom line is the guy has not allowed challenging situations prevent him from recruiting well.I am OK with Lang also. I hope, however, that he is quite selective about which players he brings with him.
Add Jason Tapp (Assoc. HC at Dartmouth)...he did a decade + at Union. I would be surprised if he didn't apply for the RPI opening.Rick Bennett, Ben Barr, Kris Mayotte to name a few
Certainly true... hard to know what stage we are at in the process. I still think this will be done prior to the FF .All of this discussion has been fun to follow. But the clock is ticking and something has to happen soon or the best prospects will be either gone or no longer interested. And that goes not only for coaches but also for the remaining talent we still have on our squad. There are some boys I would truly hate to lose simply because we are too slow to draw our gun and pull the trigger.
In Mike McMahon's newsletter, he said they were doing video interviews this week. Presumably, they'll narrow down to finalists and then bring those select few to campus, hopefully soon. I agree I would think it's done by the FF at the latest.Certainly true... hard to know what stage we are at in the process. I still think this will be done prior to the FF .
Yes I read those articles, What I still see missing is your Pres being there, saying it himself etc. When a Pres and AD are together speaking with donors and showing them a real plan on how to become more relevant, it changes things. I see how there have been several stated plans for the arena, yet nothing concrete. As they say talk is cheap.I posted this the other day from Dave Aiello, RPI alum. In it he states:
"..... Marty Schmidt, President of RPI and member of the undergraduate class of 1981, is the biggest hockey advocate since the late George Low ’48, one of his predecessors. This choice is quite significant for RPI, because hockey is a huge part of our campus culture. Anyone who has heard Marty speak knows that he realizes this is as almost as big an imperative as being top notch in all things STEM."

The Search for RPI's Next Men's Hockey Coach - Dave Aiello
I’d like to share a few thoughts on the search for RPI’s next men’s hockey coach, following the news that Dave Smith was let go as head coach of the Men’s Varsity Ice Hockey Team.daveaiello.com
Well, he refers to Marty speaking so ...I'll take his word for it...even though I haven't personally heard it yet. I've shared my frustrations here during the season re: the lack of discussion re: HFH plans. If, as others have mentioned, the coaching change was in the works as early as Jan., then it sort of makes sense that they'd hold of on grand announcements and kicking off a campaign until a new sheriff arrived.Yes I read those articles, What I still see missing is your Pres being there, saying it himself etc. When a Pres and AD are together speaking with donors and showing them a real plan on how to become more relevant, it changes things. I've been part of this type situation with another university and have seen the results. There is always more as well to make it sustainable

I do agree with your sentiment that we need concrete steps from the admin., sooner than later.
That may be true for most of the men, but look at the majors of the women’s team. Also I will bring up someone from the past….wasn’t Joe Juneau an aerospace engineering major? He didn’t do too badly for himself both in and out of hockey. And Ken Dryden went on to become a lawyer. And I know it’s a long time ago and it’s different now, but I remember the ‘54 national championship team introduction several years ago. Almost all were PhDs and MDs.He may have discovered how hard it is to be a D1 athlete and an engineering major. Go to any school and look at the majors of the athletes. They aren't generally representative of the student body as a whole, much less majors like Aero. I question whether I would have made it to an engineering degree with the time commitments these guys absorb.
Guilty as Charged !If Walter was the president of RPI back in 2017, he wouldn't have hired Barr, either . . . because he wouldn't have fired Appert in the first place ;-)
I hope Barr does well in the tourney, although Penn State is a tough first round opponent to draw.
#MeToo David, if it was up to you I believe we'd still give Dave more time to rebound from CovidGuilty as Charged !
As an alum, I give him a benefit of the doubt that he wants to make Men's program better. No one I know has good things to say about the previous adminJust an anecdotal story: I was wearing my RPI hockey vest at the store. A person came up to me saying he had never seen one of those vests. He works at RPI but I never asked what he did there. We chatted about the men’s team. He was very complimentary of Marty and had nothing good to say about Shirley. But he made a statement that caught my attention. He said Marty will only be at RPI for 5 years. He seemed pretty sure of that. If that is the case…..then they better get a move on.
i can say something good about the previous administration -- GOOD RIDDANCE !! and GOODBYE!!!As an alum, I give him a benefit of the doubt that he wants to make Men's program better. No one I know has good things to say about the previous admin
