I was referring to recruiting throughout college hockey, but ours was made even more extreme by the change in coaches. July/August roster changes used to be rare, but this season they are common. I think college hockey will reach a new steady state once the impact of the new CHL and roster rules transients work their way through the system. They are driving a lot of these really late summer changes this year.
However, the portal churn means that steady state will be at a much higher level of turnover for most teams and far greater for programs undergoing major changes. If we went back and looked at old Heisenberg pages we’d probably see the sweet spot for recruiting additions across D1 was 6-8 per year with relatively small tails on the distribution and infrequent transfers so most rosters were pretty much locked down by May. Coaches could actually take a vacation. I’ll bet ithe new normal will be 8-12 (with a few even larger after coaching changes) and we’ll see rosters changing for at least 30-60 days after the portal closes as teams adjust to transfer wins and losses. I would hope rosters will be settled by end of June-ish or coaches are going to burn out.
