RPI 2025–26: Off the Critical List and In Recovery

Looking in at this weekend, rivalry aside, there are two questions on my mind:
- Was RPI's 0 - 6 - 0 start to the season because we are a new team playing some of the hardest teams in the NCAA, or will it be a long year?
- Was Union's great 4 - 0 - 1 start because they are a good team, or because their out of conference schedule was on the easier side?
Probably some of both lol

im sick of rpi union halloween weekend every season it ruins all other plans and stuff going on ill still go to the games but im not happy about it
I get it. I planned to attend our first game in their new barn until I saw it was Halloween. As it is there were about 300 tickets left this morning for Union’s first rivalry game in one of the league’s smallest rinks. Even for Halloween that’s not a good sign.

According to Live Stats, the attendance was just over 2000.

Your point on rivalry game, one of smallest rinks is well taken. Wonder if they've sold out a game yet?

PS. The John Wayne hockey movie poster is a gem. And hilarious.

No sellouts in a building that only holds 2,300 for hockey. Even opening night came up about 60 short. Friday was almost 200 short of a sellout which is really bad since you had the pad of nearby RPI fans (not to mention the band).

Suspect it is even worse than the numbers indicate seeing that Union decided to attach their brand to a gambling operation with an attached upscale hotel. Not exactly a military secret that casinos with hotels not only hand out freebies to overnight guests but also to the walk in fly by night gamblers who lay enough money on felt tables.

Sometimes the freebie is a buffet, sometimes it's the venue's entertainment. Do not believe this particular venue has a buffet so that only leaves the house entertainment. In Schenectady, the entertainment is college hockey compliments of the nearby highly esteemed (maybe) educational institution.

Add that all up and they still cannot scrounge up 2,300 fannies to fill 2,300 seats in a sparkling new building!!!

Conclusion is that in terms of generating any student or community interest, these people may be even worse off than we are!!!

To be fair, it was Halloween. Whoever scheduled for Halloween night is dumb. These games should have been played either last weekend or Saturday/Sunday. Hell, even a lot of high school football games were moved to Thursday. Next year, with Halloween on a Saturday, no game should be scheduled.

For the football fans- RPI won big over SLU 48-0 today and shut down their own offense for the 4th period to just run out the clock and not run up the score further. Overall now 7-1 with their 2 toughest opponents left in Ithaca at home next week followed by Union on the road to wrap up the regular season.

What did I watch tonight? The inclination to take the puck and then cycle high rather than shooting was a bit maddening to watch. Some of the elements were there from when I watched them in person against BC, good defensive posture below the faceoff dots, good breakouts and puck movement starting from the D. The rest though? You can't score if you can't shoot and Union, after going like gangbusters the first period, was definitely vulenerable for the last two.

Positives tonight were the goaltending (very solid!), the crowd energy and the Band was great. I love the Blackout (despite being O-fer on winning a jersey) but tonight's game was a frustrating one to watch in person. Go RPI!

After this weekend, the defense and goaltending looks good. It should at least keep us competitive in the ECAC.
Goal scoring is awful. While we might be competitive, we will not win many of those games.
Something has to change on the offensive side.

As of right now RPI's statistics:
34.1 SA/G, 12th most in the NCAA
23.4 S/G, 58th worst in the NCAA
3.9 GA/G, ties for 8th most in the NCAA
1.6 G/G, ties for 57 worst in the NCAA
58.3% PK, 57 worst in the NCAA
12% PP, ties for 52 worst in the NCAA
We have been shut out twice in 8 games (1/4 of all games), 3 times in 9 games counting exhibition (1/3 of all games).
We are being outplayed consistently on all sides of the puck.
Attendance to the field house is the worst its been in years because play has been unwatchable in the field house for going on 2 and 1/2 years.

I don't mean to bring in negativity, as any team would struggle with the same hand that RPI has been delt this season. However, the team this year up to this point is borderline unwatchable. I don't care if this is a winning or losing season, I just hope Lang can get this team to the point where they at least look like their trying for 3 periods a game. Until that point, we are not off the critical list.

honest interview saying a lot about what needs to be done. We have corrected some issues from last year but so far, we fall way short on what i consider the most important aspect and our weakest link. Special teams will absolutely make the difference in most games for us. We have to not only do better (that is a given) we have to do a lot better. A team playing short handed or on the power play the way we have been playing just will not win many if not any games. it has to be in focus right now and it has to be dealt with before this season goes any further. i am one who believe we do have at lest some of the personnel to make a difference. In any case, i sure hope so because i am so tired of excuses.
