RPI 2024–25: Come for the Hockey, Stay for the Football

In honor of Felix Caron and Taylor Larsen, today is 23 September 2024. There are 13 days until RPI's next game.

This is based upon 6 October 2024 for the start of next season.

I don't think this off season was really any longer than most we have had recently but it sure seems like it. Last year's schedule for the first 10 games was just brutal but hopefully this year we can emerge from the early going with a far better wining percentage. Again, I feel the key to this season success is the same as last year - special teams play and overall team defense.

Agreed Doc. Our first seven are:
UMass, @Canisius x2, home for Niagara x2, Union home & home.

4-3 in that stretch is what I expect to see....hope springs eternal! Ha ha....

I certainly hope you’re right but if this team plays the same defense as last season anyone would beat them. Fingers crossed the additions in the off-season pays off. The new defensemen look much better this year. I think the Ferris state transfer will steal the net from Watson. Who has not been very good since his freshman year. Time will tell!
I will say union and Niagara are going to be very good this year. Tough series ahead

Guess this would qualify as a possible buyer beware alert about four of our away games being streamed on a platform that neither our program or conference does business with.

As the old saying goes, where there there is smoke there is probably fire. From Wiki there is the following "observation" about Flo. Enough to keep me clear of it. It reads:

For several years their subscription model has emphasized the per-month price, while the actual subscription was billed annually.[46][47] As a consequence, in 2022 a class action lawsuit was filed against FloSports in New York federal court due to their business practices. The suit claimed that FloSports 'misleads customers into believing they are only being charged a monthly fee — rather than the full annual fee — when they first sign up for the sports streaming service.'[48] FloSports later settled this case out of court in November 2023.[49]

P.S. A second competing streaming service you sometimes come across when wishing to view games is a subsidiary of a company that is supposedly in financial distress. Not exactly a comfortable landing spot for sensitive personal information.

Conclusion: If a settlement of a class action lawsuit in a federal court is necessary just to prevent people wishing to watch a game from being taken, just stay the hell away from all of them. No verification can be found that indicates business practices have changed between the November 2023 settlement and now. Instead, turn on your radio or connect to a free audio feed (if either are available) that does not require you to provide sensitive information. Never heard of anyone ever having a "problem" because they listened to a radio.

There are less than three weeks until fans have to make the first of two decisions about the safety of doing business with this entity. A second such decision has to be made a little less than three months from now. As a courtesy to other posters on this thread, any takers are encouraged to share their experience be it positive or negative.

In honor of Audrey McCutcheon, today is 24 September 2024. There are 12 days until RPI's next game.

Smitty alluded to the fact that the new keeper will push Watson, which is likely exactly what he needs. That, and the ability of his teammates to win a few D-zone faceoffs....ha ha.

It's a distinction without a difference in my view....play it to win it. If there are two squads, officials and three periods it ought to be a "game"...but what do I know ! Ha ha

Absolute agreement here - but also a chance to work on the basics - winning and controlling face offs, breaking out from the defensive zone, short handed play, defense learning how to keep the puck in the offensive zone, winning puck battles along the boards, setting up odd man rushes, etc. Teams that do these things well usually win most of their games (and virtually all of the games against opponents who cannot do these things well). Hockey is a very complicated game made up of very simple individual plays. We have given away far too many games over the past 2 decades by not doing these things well. It is a team game, perhaps more so than almost all sports and when played with a team defense and offense mentality usually results in very good results. We will see a lot of what we have for the season from this 'so called' exhibition as it is against a fairly highly rated HE team.

We typically dress more players than we would be allowed to have in a regular game, switch goalies even if they are playing well, etc. We do and should play to win, but IMO that is not the primary goal.

And of course, hope to avoid any injuries!

FWIW, RPI is #70 in the US News and World Report's list of National Universities. https://www.usnews.com/best-colleges/rpi-2803

Thanks for the posting RB. Some things really stood out for me. over 30% female enrollment? Almost makes me want to go back to school! But the average salary of about $86,000 six years after graduation? Probably would not even be able to pay tuition with that amount of income. I would still try to take my dad's advice - marry a rich girl who can cook - anything else you might want you could find somewhere else!

I noticed that 30% also. I didn't realize that it was getting that high.

An interesting thing would be to see the trend in the ranking.

ECAC coaches poll out this morning. Cornell leading the pack. Brown dead last followed by RPI in 11th place. Prove em wrong boys
