RPI 2022 Off-season: Surely, We Deserve Better

I think that they disappeared a couple of years after I entered in 1964. They were still around in 1965, but I don't recall them after that. They were not around when I was in grad school starting in 1968.

I wore a beanie when I arrived as a freshman in 1966.

We were told that we would be allowed to burn our beanies at a bonfire rally the night before the second home football game of the year, but would have to continue wearing them until that time. They said we were getting a break, because the tradition used to be that beanies could not be discarded until after the football team scored its first win of the year, but that tradition was discontinued after guys went through their entire four years without the football team ever winning a game.

Our luck - 1966 was the first year since goodness knows when that the football team actually won its opening game, but we were stuck with wearing our beanies until the night of the bonfire.

I think we were either the last or the next to the last class to actually wear beanies. Subsequent classes figured out that an RPI freshman who wasn't wearing a beanie didn't look a whole lot different from any other RPI student who wasn't wearing a beanie, so if they just refrained from wearing the things, nobody would give them any trouble.

FYI all , Eric Healy's son Ryan was just drafted by the Wild and will be playing for Teddy D next year. What a gifted offensive player Eric was.
 
None of RPI's current or known future players was picked in the NHL draft. Former RPI commit Hunter McDonald was taken #165 in the 6th round by the Flyers.
