RPI 2022 Off-season: Surely, We Deserve Better

I agree Sez, prior to coach smith we rarely had Atlantic teams on the schedule.

That's not true. We always had AHA teams on Seth-era schedules, generally from 2-4, but I remember a couple of years with up to 5 (including in-season tournament games). The difference from this schedule was that he also had games against highly regarded teams. Only if BG has a breakout season might we have even one OOC opponent that comes close to that description this year.

Edit: BG may be legit this year. Three of their top four scorers were 4th year seniors who are purportedly returning. The other was former RPI commit and rising sophomore Austen Swankler.

I hate to say it but the schedule fits the returning talent. I have watched a few of last years games over and when you focus on what the returning forwards contribute its obvious that any success at all this coming year will have to come from newcomers.

Today is 15 June 2022. There are 108 days until RPI's next game. There are 16 days until RPI has a new president.

This is based upon 1 October 2022 for the start of next season and 1 July 2022 for the end of @#$%^.

Also what happened to us playing Boston university every year? That was a team usually on the schedule every year.

Jack Parker wanted his teams to play at HFH after HEA split off from the ECAC - he liked the idea of an early-season test in a big barn with a hostile crowd. Under Buddy Powers (BU alum) the rivalry resumed in 89 or 90. It remained through much of the 90s and through Fridgen's tenure. It became less frequent under SA although the teams still played every few years. However, it's now been eight years (if memory serves) with the last game contest back in December 2014 (a 5-1 BU win at HFH).

Whatever the reason, I would hope the two teams would consider a home-and-home in the next season or two. They're fun games to watch and BU draws a good crowd at HFH, while RPI has done well at Agganis over the years. If they go to Boston to they could pair a game at BU with another against NU, BC, or one of the other area HEA teams.

Really, after the past couple of years with there being no season and no fans, just be happy there IS a schedule

Agreed. On the academic side, it looks like rigid Covid protocols will remain for students coming in the Fall. I wonder what we will see for spectator protocols. Hopefully at HFH we can back to something as close to normal as possible.

I think it's tough to speculate on any of that until Dr. Schmidt begins his tenure. Pretty much all the covid and spectator ridiculousness was directed by Shirley

You are absolutely right. We have no idea what this team will be capable of.
Also, winning is contagious, so maybe we can get off to a good start and learn how to win.
I give a lot of credit to Smith and believe that he knows what he is doing.
As for the AD, I will be surprised if he doesn't leave on July 1st.

Ken Schott's weekly article touches on Smith and his contract status...or lack thereof. It's behind a paywall so i don't have details.

The Gazette article sheds no light. The AD says to Ken Schott that Smith is our coach and adds nothing else. Schott speculates RPI will make an announcement on July 1, a Friday as it is before a long weekend. I am not sure why this is such a big deal. You either sign the guy or you don’t. Why would RPI want to limit the attention to this?

My thought is it isn’t RPI that won’t sign him, it’s Dave Smith that won’t sign. He has done a good job with a very lousy hand of cards. And the promised support never materializing. Perhaps he is going to show everyone he can take RPI to Lake Placid and then after the season, he can say pay me $X or I will go where I am wanted. And there will be lots of interested schools/ pro teams. . I am sure he has had enough of the bs and has decided he will be in the drivers seat of his career . I can’t blame the guy one bit.

Shirley won't sign him, has nothing to do with Coach Smith not wanting to sign or the AD not wanting him back. He will be signed during the summer once Dr. Schmidt is in place. RPI wants to limit the attention to this because surely they can't let our leader Shirley get justifiably attacked for this adding to her terrible presidency

see, I’ve kinda thought the opposite. I’ve been thinking that he’s already been signed, she’s just waiting until June 30 to make the announcement as sort of a last hurrah and a “see, I told yo so” thing. You would definitely k ow more than me though

Nothing about this makes sense, so it is probably the quintessential way to close Shirley's presidency. The good news is that Coach Smith closed a good-looking pair of incoming freshmen and 3 promising portal transfers after the season ended. He must have told them a pretty convincing story.
