Today is 29 March 2022. There are 186 days until RPI's next game. There are 94 days until RPI has a new president.

This is based upon 1 October 2022 for the start of next season and 1 July 2022 for the end of @#$%^.

I'm not sure where I'll be on July 1st, but I'll be going out for drinks to celebrate wherever I am, that's for sure

Could not agree more. Personally, in this household, we will treat it as if we won the Stanley Cup (in a seventh game triple overtime!)

Today is 30 March 2022. There are 185 days until RPI's next game. There are 93 days until RPI has a new president.

What a bizarre way to handle this by McElroy and co? Either he’s your coach or he’s not? Why are you waiting till the 11th hour to announce something? Who does this? Great job lee way to build some animosity within your D1 hockey program. What’s next cut hockey so he can focus on football and build a stadium that seats 80,000 for a d3 football team? Lol The other issue is let’s say Dave isn’t coming back the way this has been handled looks ridiculous and I’m sure will deter a lot of coaches from even looking at RPI. Absolute garbage move

a little bit of pure speculation, just for kicks: this is the highest profile (and maybe highest paid) non-academic position on campus. SAJ is "transitioning out" - she has three months left and is essentially a lame duck. Let's assume Dr. Schmidt is already spending time on campus, meeting with people, and is in the process of seeing what's working and what could be going better. SAJ doesn't care to be saddled with a pretty significant decision concerning a sport/program she essentially doesn't care about, and doesn't want to tie Schmidt's hands... so she and McElroy hand it off to Schmidt. So the ball is in the future president's court. I'm guessing he'd want to meet with Smith before deciding on an extension for Smith. If he grants Smith an extension, then Shirley and Co. will announce it in the coming weeks.

If this is wrong (and it may very well be) then the way Smith is being treated is beyond bush league and gives Smith full license to test the waters elsewhere.

I figured that Linden would leave, but Dubinsky was unexpected. Perhaps he wants to spend another year with his brother as he did last year in the USHL. his brother is going to UMD.

This is beyond pathetic. I argued that even Shirley and her statuette corps of administrators couldn't be that bad as to leave this decision to fester and was sure that Smith had some sort of assurance that he would be going forward. After 20+ years I should have known better. Given the circumstances Coach Smith has been more than professional. So professional, that it hid the reality of his circumstances. In fact, that may be the problem as he's the only one acting professionally in this low-budget production. It's Shirley's and McElroy's responsibility, as long as they are collecting paychecks from the Institute, to act in its best interests. If they've checked out and are no longer doing their jobs, then they are the ones that should be leaving immediately, not Dave Smith.

Not being in the CD, I don't have a subscription to the Times-Union. Did anyone in the administration comment on what procedure they are following to get to a decision or did they fall back on the ultimate "leave the guy hanging" line, "we don't comment on personnel issues?" Frankly, I'm surprised half the team isn't in the portal.

rpi82, you're not going to like the answer...

There are no words to describe all of this. No way to defend it. Anyone who did not expect much of this has not been carefully following this administration for the past 2 decades. I can only add that i am am a very proud RPI graduate and extremely thankful that I was a student there almost 60 years ago as i would certainly not have wanted to be there during the past 20 years.
