RPI 2022-23: Return of the Schmidt and the Fans

Agreed. I hope Marty does look at Kirk McDonald. Kirk would be a great hire. I’m not buying this **** hockey and even ****tier recruiting. Thanks Aspy

His name popped into my head before they hired Smith. Believe he was coaching I'm the ECHL at the time, Reading Royals. Guy is a warrior on and off the ice.

Yeah he killed it in Reading! No doubt a warrior! Dave smith winning percentage at rpi is .379…..yeah enough said! After next weeks loses to Colgate and Cornell he will have 101 loses in less than 6 seasons. Haha

Kirk McDonald is a great coach, but I don't think Coach Smith is anywhere near the hot seat yet. He did just sign a 5 year extension.

Also want to wish everyone here a Happy New Year! Hope 2023 brings everyone happiness, and hopefully our Engineers can turn around the season

The thing about Kirk is that he would have instant cred with everyone becuase he is so well liked...great personal narrative. Plus being Coach in the USHL, he has a good perspective of who the players that are good to recruit and the relationships to get them.

AspyDad the voice of reason and consensus builder returns hopefully not to late.Lets all agree that as much as we want to blame Shirl's this dumpster fire lays at the feet of 1 Lee McElroy it's his guy and his mess. Schmitt needs to have a sit down w/him and get this fixed and Aspy is correct (as he usually is) Kirk McDonald would be a good start . If McElroy ever picks or signs another coach on his own we might as well tell Norris to turn the light off when he leaves !

Totally agree with your assessment of McElroy. I thought that he would retire with Shirley, but no such luck.
I think that we got screwed in the transfer portal this year and that is what is causing the poor play this year.
Smith had us going in the right direction for a while, but we are getting killed with the transfers. JMO

He’s a players coach for sure. Very well respected. He was on dubuques radar for a while.

I agree about McElroy and the portal, and I don't think that another coach could have stopped the hemorrhaging. OTOH if we lose a couple of the players this summer who have shown talent this year, then Smith may not be long for Troy.

The portal door swings both ways kids leave for a reason ! How much did the portal effect Rand Peknold or Mike Shaffer,Ted Donoto or even Casey Jones for that fact the portal can also be an opportunity to get better so using the portal for an excuse is lame it is in some cases a self inflicted wound !

Every coach you listed has been at their current school at least a decade and had years to build up their programs. Casey Jones didn't make Lake Placid or the NCAA tournament until his 7th year as coach.

Schaefer and Pecknold literally have coached at their schools since before I was born!

Do you really think that we have an equal chance in the portal? We lose our best players and get to chose from the good schools players who want to get away because they get no ice time. The only way we get talent, is if we get lucky. Not even close to an equal chance at talent.

We have two Natty banners in our barn and a player who wore the Cherry and White in the Hockey Hall of Fame. Yes, I believe this program, if run correctly should be a desination for decent players.

We should at least be in the hunt and be landing decent players through the portal. Please see my response above to sezenak.

I can't remember having no road wins in the first half of the season...maybe in the 60s when my hero Garry Kearns saved the program and had to basically start from scratch but not even then.

I absolutely agree. I just don't think Coach Smith has had enough time to build the program into that yet. The administration basically put us back to square 1 or 2 after 2019-20 when the program was on the rise. It's too early to say one way or the other if Coach Smith can build us into that, in my opinion. I think we'll know by year 8, and at that point, he will be nearing the end of his extension and they can make the decision then.

Wa Wa Wa it's too hard...Excuses Excuses Excuses !!! We were once a proud program that felt we could compete with anybody now we feel as though everybody has an advantage over us that's BS and exactly why we need to do something...It's not working

You are right, it is hard.
This didn't happen over night. We have only been relevant for a handful of years since the year 2000. That is four coaches and nothing much has changed.
You say that we need to do something, but you don't have any suggestions.
We can fire the coach, but we have tried that and it hasn't worked.
Smith made a good start, but the last two years have gone in the wrong direction.
It would be really nice if we could get a couple of really good offensive players who can put the puck in the net. Its been a long time since we had that. But how do we go about getting them to RPI?
I am sure that all of the coaches that have come through HFH has tried to get that but like you said, it is hard.

We don’t have the recruiters to get players who can score on a consistent basis. Frigden and appert could recruit circles around this current group. We recruit to develop over the course of 4 years now. Hence why we have no nhl draft picks. Problem is you have many years in between when we suck bad. If you’re lucky you get a ture linden or a Owen savory. If you don’t then you look foolish with borderline D1 players all over your roster.
