RPI 2015 Off Season Thread: Another Long Spring and Summer :(

Re: RPI 2015 Off Season Thread: Another Long Spring and Summer :(

it is true that the newspaper business is contracting. There are too many dailies in the Capital District and some - the Record, Amsterdam Recorder, Gloversville Leader-Herald, Catskill Mail - probably will be gobbled up or die in the next few years. You are right to point out the layoffs, but this story has been out there now since Sunday, right? They should've made a phone call by now. Maybe they got it in the print editions, but still nothing on the website as of this morning. Also nothing on college Hockey News or USCHO. I know this is the off-season, but if this happened to BC, Minnesota or Cornell it would've been reported in more than just the Daily Gazette. Kudos to Schott. BTW, no mention in the Times-Union yet either.

If you feel that strongly about having the Record write a story about a hockey player who reneged on his NLI to play at RPI, contact information for folks in the Sports department is here: http://www.troyrecord.com/contact

Don't care. Just observing that other recruits decommit and it gets reported on line and if this was a basketball recruit at Siena or Albany the locals would be all over it.

Really disappointed that Dillon went back on his commitment. Maybe they shouldn't have draped him in that awful black uniform. Hard to turn down an opportunity to wear the best uniform in hockey, 'though: http://www.edmontonjournal.com/Dillon+looks+playing+time+with+Kings/11100592/story.html

Just kidding, obviously. I would hope that fashion statements are low on the list of criteria.

That's absolutely true. In the Capital District, the typical fan's view of local amateur sports is centered on bouncy ball... high school bouncy ball. And one of the big stories at season's end was about a couple of accomplished high school juniors who are forgoing their senior years to play two years at prep school in hopes of 'getting noticed' by Division 1 teams.

If it's any consolation, once Union won a their title a year ago, the story was basically over. The local papers and tv coverage had already moved on. (Hello, baseball season!) My Union friends had a chance to channel their inner 'little brother' one more time on their biggest day ever.

.....not quite sure what you mean by, “on line”, but it was all over the hockey scene on Twitter within minutes and subsequently on just about every Jr. Hockey/college hockey online blog by evening. As far as local coverage goes, meh. You’ll get better & quicker info right here.

It is just a symptom of the fact that in most places in the US, hockey is not regarded as a major sport, and non-NHL hockey is even less well reported. It least now those who want to know can find out anything on-line. I can remember when I had to wait two weeks of the Intercollegiate Hockey Newsletter to find out RPI scores.

I was just close enough, if the wind was blowing down from the north, to be able to hear an occasional score on WGY 810 AM radio every so often on a newscast.

Specifically, I meant legitimate college hockey news sites like uscho and college hockey news. Anything that appears on blogs or Twitter needs to be verified by another source.

Good luck trying to find any results here on Long Island back in the day. The only reliable 'newspaper' that reported college hockey results was USA Today. The radio broadcast from Troy would rarely reach the 150 mile gulf to here, the signal being so weak that it was very difficult to hear and it would fade in and out. You were lucky if you could catch the score let alone what was going on. Likewise I remember in the early 1970's holding my transistor radio (you younger fellows can look that up) off the balcony of the Student Union building trying to catch the Rangers games broadcast from NYC. Those were challenging times. Alas, now we are challenged in different ways.

You don't even have to go back that far. In 1993 when I first started following RPI hockey, I had to wait for my son to call me the day after games just to get the scores. And I only live two hours from Troy.
I love the internet.

You can hit WGY from Buffalo at night (at least), but I don't know how long they've been a 50,000 watt powerhouse. And obviously with WRPI being a FM station, there's a limit on how far that goes.

Re: RPI 2015 Off Season Thread: Another Long Spring and Summer :(

It is my daydream that "the Engineer way" of playing college hockey in 2015-16 will resemble how the Chicago Blackhawks play, winning face-offs consistently to start a puck-control offense, using speed and play-making ability to score, and playing stout team defense backstopped by a superior goalie, and never giving up, no matter how much frustration you've had to cope with.

2016 "should be" our year, eh? :)

I don't want anything about a team I cheer for to resemble anything like the Chicago Blackhawks. The red jerseys with black and white stripes are close enough.

Technology is awesome. Especially when I can listen to a game in Asia, eating breakfast Saturday morning....

Don't mention one of our draft picks from 09-10 to him... ;)
