Re: RPI 2015 Off Season Thread: Another Long Spring and Summer :(

Congrats DrD....the surprise is yardwork. :D

Fishy: Turns out she did not want to wait the extra week for our anniversary - Friday she took me out for the day (almost knowing my disappointment would be coming with the Rangers) and bought me a new car. My dad was always right- "Marry a rich girl who can cook" was what he used to say. Then he added- "Anything else you can get elsewhere." I got the cook and then stayed with her long enough I ended up marrying her for MY money.
Certainly softens the blow since I really felt the Rangers could have won last year and most certainly would be in the finals this year. For 2 years they have had a very good team but when you cannot score that extra goal when you need it, well, that's why hockey is the most entertaining of all sports.

Re: RPI 2015 Off Season Thread: Another Long Spring and Summer :(

Exactly. Backup Kazzy this year & mentor your future #1 next year until he’s ready to assume the starting role similar to Kazzy’s Fr. year. All just speculation of course.

I was trying to figure out what happened to Rutledge at Michigan. He suffered an early eye injury. When he returned, he was platooned and ended with the poorest stats of the three goalies http://www.uscho.com/stats/team/michigan/mens-hockey/2012-2013/.

BTW, at 5'11", Rutledge would be small for an SA goalie. Diebold at 6'1" has been the only #1 or #2 goalie under 6'3".

Re: RPI 2015 Off Season Thread: Another Long Spring and Summer :(

I take a couple of days off from reading this thread, and this is what I come back to? Ouch!!!
I had a good feeling about this team this year, and if Kasdorf can stay healthy for the full year, I still think we can win 20 or more games.
If he get injured, that goes out the window.
And I don't even want to think about the next two years. The outlook is very cloudy without a viable NCAA goaltender.
Lets hope that Appert pulls a rabbit out of his hat in the next month or so. :(:mad:

I’m not so concerned. Good/Great players emerge every year. SA & others already know who they are. Losing a player like we just did ATT hurts, no question. I have no doubt there will be a good one in net next year. Means nothing though if they continue to score at the rate they do.

Re: RPI 2015 Off Season Thread: Another Long Spring and Summer :(

I'll go along with turk and post this here. It includes a video. No mention of RPI.

If our forwards stay healthy-which is asking a lot given the past few years-we will score more. I would feel just fine if someone could guarantee me that Kazzy would stay healthy and play 35 or more games this coming year. i would feel even better if someone could actually get this team to play the fundamentals well (winning face offs and getting production on the power play would be more than enough for me).

Re: RPI 2015 Off Season Thread: Another Long Spring and Summer :(

Edmonton newspaper article about Dillon signing with the Oil Kings http://www.edmontonsun.com/2015/06/01/oil-kings-recruit-goalie-alec-dillon.
Dillon was for a time committed to RPI, a New York school with a powerhouse hockey program, but retained his CHL eligibility by spending last season in the USHL.
Powerhouse?

It isn't clear what he could have done to lose his CHL eligibility.

Re: RPI 2015 Off Season Thread: Another Long Spring and Summer :(

“Realistically I think there was never really a time where I didn’t see myself coming in,” Dillon said. “I thought I was always coming to play, but ideally it was time for me to come in when Tristan left. I wanted to get games in and I did last year, so ... it’s a good time for me to come in.”

So the kid and his family always intended for him to use the RPI scholarship as a bargaining chip. He was probably never going to be here more than one year anyway. My feeling is that this program is better off without him. Too bad that he didn't bolt much sooner so the staff had a chance to get a goalie with some personal character as well as hockey talent. Too bad all around.

Interesting that Ken Schott still seems to be the only college hockey reporter to do anything on this story. Says a lot about the Troy Retched when the paper across the river consistently beats them on RPI hockey stories. The Record must be too busy chasing rumors about Jeff Ruland maybe coming to Siena as an assistant coach sometime later this year, maybe.

I should have known he was a bad egg when the Kings wanted him. That'll just be another reason to hate LA if he ever makes the show.

The Record is really hurting for staff at this point. Their parent company just laid off six staffers, including an assistant sports editor. There's only so much they can cover with the few people they have left.

Re: RPI 2015 Off Season Thread: Another Long Spring and Summer :(

it is true that the newspaper business is contracting. There are too many dailies in the Capital District and some - the Record, Amsterdam Recorder, Gloversville Leader-Herald, Catskill Mail - probably will be gobbled up or die in the next few years. You are right to point out the layoffs, but this story has been out there now since Sunday, right? They should've made a phone call by now. Maybe they got it in the print editions, but still nothing on the website as of this morning. Also nothing on college Hockey News or USCHO. I know this is the off-season, but if this happened to BC, Minnesota or Cornell it would've been reported in more than just the Daily Gazette. Kudos to Schott. BTW, no mention in the Times-Union yet either.

Schott seems to be dedicating to the reporting of capital district college hockey (and Philadelphia sports on his Facebook every now and then), and given that reputation, it would make sense that he'd report on it while other sports reporters are writing other sports, like baseball. It doesn't surprise me that it's only receiving local coverage, given it's a recruit bolting for MJ that never put on a college uniform in his life. At this point, he's just another statistic in the argument for college vs. major junior.

Newspapers are on the decline in general because of the advent of online news. Sure, newspapers are trying to survive with online editions, but are clinging to a subscription model instead of using the classifieds as the traditional advertisement (or even in conjunction thereof) to help pay for the cost, while the public instead reads blogs, such as Without a Peer, that are crowdfunded through donations.
