Re: RPI 2015 Off Season Thread: Another Long Spring and Summer :(

Taking a look at the schedules thread and possible opponents... I wonder if we're going to finally see Western Michigan? The week around Union's final is fairly open, and yes there is a New Hampshire game there, but I have a feeling it will be moved to October 23rd, at least based on Union's schedule. Colorado College may also be a possibility around 9/10 October. As much as I would love to see us play Tech (MTU), I think the home/home with Union will clash with that.

Obviously there's the rumour about BC... are we going to see a return trip to Bentley? We have seemed to do that as of late with the Atlantic teams.

Does anyone think that the NCAA will finally figure out that RPI's nickname is really the Injun-Ears and make us change it? ;)

sorry

....new that pasta was a great source for carbs but who knew for iron also :D

Actually, taking a closer look, it MIGHT be a bolt instead of a screw. However, given the popular meme amongst the Engineers, it made sense. ;)

Not meaning to be a wise guy (particularly when it comes to veterans' stories), but how did a paratrooper injured at Iwo Jima end up in a German hospital? I'm surprised we even used paratroopers at Iwo Jima (I thought it was purely a naval landing) because the entire island was occupied by the Japanese so they couldn't be dropped behind enemy lines. I can't even imagine the bravery it would take to come down in a parachute onto what amounted to a rock pile in the middle of the Pacific with heavily entrenched enemy forces in all directions. It's hard to call someone that was critically wounded lucky, but your grandfather must have had someone looking out for him to have survived that hell hole. Bless him and all of our veterans.

No offense at all. He was one of the first ones to land on the island, and he was clearing the way for our forces to land at Omaha Beach. And yes, he was one lucky guy. As a matter of fact, everyone thought he was dead and he was thrown into a grave with all of the other dead bodies. Someone saw his chest just faintly moving up and down, and rescued him. Turns out, the guy who saved his life was his best friend growing up, and they lived about a block from each other. So yes, he did indeed have someone looking out for him. To the day he died, his mind was still as sharp as a tack, so he knew he was dying. His body jsut gave out on him.

Omaha Beach? Your grandfather was in both D-Day and the battle for Iwo Jima - arguably, along with the Battle of the Bulge and several others others, the most horrendous fighting in a devastating war? The odds of surviving both of those, particularly in a forward unit, weren't "ever in his favor." He didn't have just someone looking out for him - he must have had a flock of angels. Guys like that earned an express pass into heaven.

My grandfather was a Seabee in the South Pacific. After they secured another island, he'd keep his sanity by painting pictures. He'd paint landscapes or even some of the natives. We still have some of them with inscriptions from places like Vella LaVella. It's incredible what a different life we have than that generation.

We're pretty far off topic but it is the off-season thread after all.

No, my bad. He was clearing the way for our forces to land on Iwo, NOT in Europe. He was though in Guadalcanal, which was another bloody battle. He was a hero in every sense of the word, but couldn't be in two places at once. :) That is my fault.

That's what I get for posting after a really, really, really stressful day.

Well, that saved him about a 10,000 mile trip. :D

Either way he was definitely a hero. Imagine for a second hearing these words, "Gentlemen, you get the honor of leading the way onto the beach....."
