Just because FD criticizes the team when they do not play together as one doesn't mean he isn't a strong supporter. I too suffer every time they lose but if you can't be realistic about the shortcomings then you have little chance of fixing them.

Oh please. I too suffer with every loss, and I am disappointed with the results so far this season.
But where we differ, is I don't predict a loss before it happens or expect a collapse in the second period of a winnable game.
He may be a great fan, but he lacks support for this team.
I am happy to see that he isn't blaming the engineers for the outrageous behavior at the end of last nights game.

Dude, the best thing to come out of this is that you are finally supporting your team.

I've always been in support of the team. Now that Appert has beat a team he calls his rival at least one in the past three years, regardless of league consideration, he receives respect from me again. That was what I said in November, and I follow through now. Was the "Fire Appert" thread pre-emptive? Perhaps. However, one thing that it did do is show everyone's stance on what they would like to see out of the team, and what they would like to see done in order to get there. The cultists were exposed, and everyone who was disappointed with a facet of the team was given a chance to express themselves freely without judgement. Mission accomplished, bring on next week. We have a belt to defend (the New York Belt).

As was mentioned by DeepRed in the score thread, if you go into something expecting the worst, you receive a pleasant surprise if something good happens, and if something bad happens, it was expected, so no biggie. Also, we have seen many times in the past both second period meltdowns and the inability to beat certain teams. Some would consider it gambler's fallacy (such as seeing red come up 20 times on the roulette wheel), but because there is skill involved and not just straight chance, predictions based upon weight can be made. RPI winning last night and not having a second period meltdown was improbable, but not without possibility.

It shows the program's true colors. Any other opponent, he'd be gone for at least the year. Granted, based upon contracts, I assume that the college would have to buy out part of his contract, and then pay a coach on top of that.

He'll get more from the league/NCAA. You can't punch an opposing player and try to attack a coach without sitting at least 10.

Mark Morris was fired at Clarkson for a physical altercation with a player in a practice. This guy takes a swing at a student athlete and Union only gives him 2 games. Nice.

He'll get more from the league/NCAA. You can't punch an opposing player and try to attack a coach without sitting at least 10.

My unbiased (I hate all you guys equally! ) take on it from watching the various videos:

1) Union "started" it with the crosscheck to the head/neck.
2) Even if congratulating their goalie was their original intent when they first swung their legs over the boards, the RPI players coming off the bench all saw the crosscheck and immediately skated in to retaliate. Even so, you can't really consider it to be "leaving the bench" after the final horn, since all players are allowed on the ice at that point, so while you can penalize the retaliation, you really can't hit them with any extra for leaving the bench.
3) Not too much to the fights after that, really - mostly just paired up pushing rather than pugilism (how's that for alliteration?), but a few gloves hit the ice. Result = matching DQs, seemed to be fair in my eyes.
4) No clue what snapped in Bennet's head at that point, but he went bat guano crazy. Shoved the opposing coach, and then once he was pulled far enough away that he couldn't get to Appert, he deliberately punched an RPI player in the head. He was pulled well away from Appert by that time, so there's no way he can claim he was aiming at Appert and missed (as if that would be any better). That was pretty much the end of it.

So in the end, I'd say

Union looks bad for: crosscheck to head, coach pushing opposing coach, coach punching opposing player. Classlessness grade: F-
RPI looks bad for: retaliation for a vicious crosscheck after an upset in an emotional rivalry game. Classlessness grade: A-

Edit: Union should definitely fire Bennett. A coach just cannot punch a student, period, regardless of the circumstances, and regardless of whether it happens during the game (a la Woody Hayes) or after.

completely agree. the initial cross check alone would draw a suspension at the NHL level, so bodie should get suspended by the league. bennett, again, just looked like a total buffoon out there.

The only players engaged in the fight at the point the RPI players leave the bench and start taking shots at the Union players are Bodie and Higgs, rest of the Union players are just standing around at that point until the entire RPI bench goes after the six Union guys on the ice. For the first minute or so of the fight it's about 14 on 6 RPI to Union players. Neither team looks great out of this one but I don't see how you can give an A- in classiness to RPI. Bodie's hit was unnecessary but it's an isolated incident until the RPI bench clears and engages in the fight.
