As a citation, Section 4, Rule 15.2 (page 30 in the 2012-14 book) gives the explanation. Granted, the DPG was in place in 2009-10, but no longer.
That answers my question. Under NHL rules, Gruschow's penalty at 3:14 would have been waived and the score would have been tied at 1-1. Under NCAA rules she goes to the box, Smelker then gets a penalty at 3:29 and Princeton scores at 4:36 on the 5 on 3 to go ahead 2-1. I guess that means that under NCAA rules if you are going to take a penalty in front of your own net, you better make it count...don't let the player get off a shot![]()
