Re: RPI 2010 Off-Season Thread IV -- It's Looking Like No "I-V" Is Necessary!

Dr. D, I attended one hockey game at the old MSG, back in the early 1960's.

I note that, elsewhere on this thread, someone listed reasons why Achilles Rink is a bad facility. Included among the reasons was that there is only one Zamboni.

As I recall, the time I visited the old MSG, no Zamboni was used at all. Between periods, the ice was resurfaced by a bunch of guys with shovels and barrels.

Did the old MSG not have a Zamboni, or was it on the fritz the night I was there?

Thay didn't have a zamboni. I have a vague recollection that there was no way to get one onto the rink, but they did get elephants there for the circus, so maybe that part is in error.

With Gallagher, Greening and now Nash gone about half of Cornell's scoring is gone. And it wasn't that robust last year. Scrivens also played every game but one so the backup goaltending has virtually no NCAA experience. Down year for Cornell?

:)

This is the way it was told to me by my father. I'll stand corrected, but if memory serves, thanks to the union local, at that time, MSG was the last NHL rink to convert to mechanized ice surfacing.

If my pudgy fingers calculated correctly, all told, Cornell has lost 176 of 293 total point production. :p

Shafer knows how to prep goalies. They do have keeper Andy Iles coming in from the USNDTP U18s where he went 20-6-1 with three shutouts, a 2.16 goals-against average and a .916 save percentage. Garman who will be a senior, was their backup last season -- his one appearance was a 21 save mop-up in 4-3 loss to P'ton.

Now I am confused. You first wrote that your father told you the same thing that I wrote, and then you wrote it was the union.

Iles is going to have to perform well consistently.

Poorly written by yours truly.:p

The story goes that the union, in an effort to preserve jobs, resisted initial efforts to introduce the Zamboni.

I too remember the shovel brigade followed by the barrels spritzing water. In the 50's they were just not mechanized yet. :)

Got it now. :) That makes more sense than what I wrote.

Does he have a history of not doing so?

Sadly he doesn't.

Rereading that, I mean that he has performed well elsewhere.

I've been to both the old and new Army rinks (We determined that my hubby played against Jim Knowlton in that rink in 1978 or 9...I watched it totally unaware of the future connection...). The old rink was definitely what the Hobey Baker rink sounds like. The new rink has the kind of feeling that I feel about the Quinnipiac rink...sterile.:(

If they were playing at that time, I probably saw one if not both of them play.
I agree with your assessment of the new rinks, but I really enjoyed the Q rink last year. It was as bright an arena as I have ever seen, and watching the game was great. Of course it might not have been that good if the score was reversed. :)

Jasma has this all just about right. My amendments to his list:
Conte is OK but I wouldn't put it in the great category.
UNH's rink should be in the great category. 6K fans sold out every night.
Merrimack's rink does remind me of my high school gymnasium. However, you can't really beat the ticket prices for Hockey East and you do get an appreciation for the speed of the game when you are there. So not a great rink but a good take nonetheless.
I'm a big fan of Bright arena too - great place to see a game and it would be a great atmosphere is they had better student and fan support.

Thanks for catching my omission of UNH. That is a great venue.
Bright Arena is a nice little barn, but the crowd arrives late and really doesn't match up to the fans at HFH, Lynah, gutterson and many others.

Shafer knows how to prep goalies.

Plugging goalies into the world's most boring hockey system isn't so much good coaching as it is adhering to a POS system.

FWIW, it has been working more often than not for him. I do wonder if it will work this season, and if it doesn't work, the tantrums may be epic. :D

As reported on Twitter a few days ago, Pat Cullen was indeed invited to Capitals prospect camp last week. Heres a short video interview with him:

He's also shown in a few photos in the gallery:

I know this will help him out quite a bit. He had a rough go at it last year, and I certainly hope he steps it up this year.
