Robo-Shark Week 2010

Re: Robo-Shark Week 2010

I thought Ultimate Air Sharks was pretty sweet. Although I kept hoping the shark would eat the cameraman.

Re: Robo-Shark Week 2010

If they ever showed somebody crash and die, it'd be an instant TV-MA - I don't know if the H channel wants to go that route; that type of thing is more Fox's specialty. "Next on Fox: fast trucks, slow moose."

While claiming emotions involved are "real" in a show like this one is questionable at best, I think it's also a stretch to say the place you worked in was "real" while the one they work in is not - or is somehow easier. All a show like this provides is a glimpse at what happens there over a set period of time. Short of a hidden camera documentary style approach, you simply won't ever get the full picture of what goes on there.

Well, next week, there's some sort of accident on the highway. One of the truckers finds a couple bloody guys wandering on the highway. :p

And I watch Pawn Stars to see the items there, not for the emotional impact of the show.

Re: Robo-Shark Week 2010

Watching people drive trucks is lame...it is like NASCAR without the impending sense of death and incest!

And as for Pawn Stars, that show is so fake it makes me laugh that people watch it! I worked in a real pawn shop those guys couldnt handle it.

Broker: We will give you two grand for it only
Freak: But I need 4 grand it is important!
Broker: No sorry...
Director: Yeah we missed his reaction can we start again and please show more emotion!

Rinse, repeat :D

I want to know why people continue to go to that place to sell stuff. Now, I don't have a lot of experience with pawnshops, but why would someone bring something in that is worth pretty good money to a place that always cuts the starting price in half? Even when they have their expert friends come in and give an estimate, they still go lower than the minimum price. I love the line "What you have to understand is, we have to sell this for a profit". Well, you have your own TV show and you're ripping off everyone else that comes in to sell something, so how about you buy it for what your "expert friend" said.

I feel like I'm blaming too much of it on the pawnshop guys though. Some of the people bringing stuff in are just plain dumb. One guy brought in something from the Civil War, and the expert they brought in said it was worth $5,000-6,000. So what does the guy end up selling it for? $3,000.

Really? You're going to go 40-50% below what you could? Go to a Civil War auction or convention and sell it there for full profit.

Isn't that the point though? If you bring it to a pawn shop, chances are you a) need/want the money ASAP, b) don't know its true value and c) even if you did know the true value, don't want to deal with the hassle of an auction/convention (see a).

Re: Robo-Shark Week 2010

Entering something into an auction or convention has some serious fees at times, so you might not gross much more than what the pawn shop will give you in cash right then and there. Also, as Maineiak mentioned, people that go to pawn shops are usually desperate. Especially in Vegas.

Re: Robo-Shark Week 2010

I am halfway through Ultimate Air Jaws...that dude is kinda nuts!

If I found out I was dying in 6 months I would travel to the most Great White infested areas, pay off some dude with a cage and get in the water!

Re: Robo-Shark Week 2010

I just did Research...for $775 you can take a 1 day trip to the Farallon Islands and go in a cage with Great White Sharks! That includes everything but the air fare. If you really want to spend some cash you can go to Guadalupe Islands (where they did most of Expedition: Great White) on a 5 day trip where you get to cage dive for 3 days for about 3 grand!

Man that would be nuts!

If it's that much of a done deal, just go in the water without the cage.
