To be perfectly honest, a lot of this has to do with $$$$$. As states reduce the amount they contribute to a school's annual budget in terms of the % of the annual budget, schools are forced to look for alternative ways of generating revenue to pay the bills. One way is to increase student numbers, because students pay tuition. And the easiest way to increase student numbers is to increase retention rates.Patman said:A lot of that is retention rate type of things. Never quite understood why that's such a major black mark but i suppose if you assume that you know the students are likely to be intelligent but underperforming then its in the school's interest to catch that student so that the school looks better on the other side when the intelligent student does well later in life. Otherwise to keep retention rates higher just so you don't look so bad doesn't seem to be the right thing... people aren't owed an education.
