Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #173: (Insert Title)

I took the less traveled route of living and working for a year in Wisconsin before enrolling.

Did 1.5 years in Illinois and then took the time off, paid taxes and claimed myself which allowed me to get in-state tuition.

I get that many don't want to take time off and many parents worry that their kid wouldn't go back, but it worked out for me.

Missed responding to this along the way... Michigan certainly isn't Minnesota, but it's not all bad. And we've added to the family - our Little Gopher Fan was born in October. She loves hockey already.
Congratulations! :) Glad to hear that she is of above-normal intelligence. Look for opportunities to take her to events where Goldy is present while she is still in her formative years and she'll be a Gopher fan for life.

Cost is a huge issue for us right now. Finding an affordable option is going to be key. I don't want him coming out of school with a mountain of dept as so many are doing now. I don't want to push my own retirement out till I'm 103 either. I may push going to a CC for the first two years - they are cheaper than his high school right now!

It's so different than when I went in as I was able to work summers and pay for most of my tuition for the year. Add in working during school year and taking some time off to work and I graduated dept free and got no help or aid (other than living at home the first couple years). We will, of course, pursue aid, grants, etc.

Fit for what he thinks he wants to do is also key. It would be pointless to send him to a school that doesn't offer what he thinks he wants to pursue (which may be something like physical therapy or athletic trainer stuff).

Make the argument now, lot of the sales pitch is just that. Trying to make the sale. Unless the school is tossing money at you privates aren't usually worth considering.

If your kid is savvy enough then I'd say line up the numbers. Loans for dreams sound nice but eventually paying a mortgage each month without having a house is a bitter pill.

I will say, at least you live in a state w cheap land.

For the region, we have pretty expensive land in this state.

The downtown Minneapolis sign?

Yes.

I have a Sr. near The Nook . . . Many of my kids grade school classmates ended up under the Grain Belt sign & seemed to really like it. Brother Micheal Collins (RIP) built a wonderful legacy under the sign.

1) Everything we heard from people with kids there was the same way. Plus my daughter really liked it.

2) If someone was feeling rivalry-ish -- and I'm not! I'm just saying -- you could say that right there is a great example of why SP is better than MSP:
a) SP -- My kid goes to school near The Nook.
b) MSP -- My kid goes to school near Westside Volkswagen.

:p

Does she play football or basketball? ;)

Alas, no. That girl has some good innate athleticism, too! But she'd rather sit inside and read books. Nerd.

I was just checking Facebook and saw a post from someone in my feed who I did not recognize at all. Clicked on her name, still no clue, Facebook said we were friends. I unfriended her. How does that happen?

Did someone you know change their name? That has happened to me before.

Every hockey coach that ever recruited me encouraged me with the words, "college will always be there."

I would highly advise against that.:)

I just found out that a girl (young woman!) from my hometown back in Indiana was chosen Miss Basketball. Don't know the family, and haven't been back in years, but it was exciting to hear. No one's ever won that from my school. Woohoo! (Side note: Why is our mascot Felix the Cat? It's a long story.)

.....that's not Minneapolis....

Son, if you think facts will affect someone's prejudices, you've got **** poor knowledge of human nature. :p

Whew. Finally have everything just about ready for the week/end. Got the extras for the GPL tailgate breakfast on Sat, picked up some beer to go with the beer I have saved for months for this, misc tailgating gear packed and ready, and the jerseys freshly washed and waiting to be worn.

Oh boy, is this great! /Flounder

The Mrs and I went to a thing at Jr's school for parents of sophomores about college. How to pick a college, when to take the SAT/ACTs, how much they cost, what help the high school provides. BSM has a lot of resources to help us. The junior class will have 3 dedicated counselors for this stuff, a big website with data for it all and a bunch of on-line tools. They pay for on-line testing tutorial tool for the kids to use to prep. A bunch of colleges from around the country come to the high school for informational meetings (yesterday was Arizona State). Looking forward to fun couple of years ahead trying to figure it all out for Jr.
Yeah. Lil got all that
SOunds like a really comprehensive set up. Great stuff.
