Re: Rep Retirement Lodge #171: On Turkeys.

Good afternoon Lodge.

Cold day here in 320ville. Wind chills in the -30 to -40 all day.

Power finally went out, still raining, branches still breaking, finally generator going, won't run house but refrigerator is plugged in and phone is charging. Tomorrow highs in low 20s, can't wait to see the carnage. I can see not having power for days

Yikes. Good luck with that. Living in MN we experience quite a variety of weather including ice but to the best of my knowledge we rarely experience ice like the right coast does.

Yeah, it usually just snows or gets to cold for any precipitation.

The last true ice storm that comes to mind was about 17-18 years ago. IIRC it was around Feb time, complete with Thundersleet. Some places had 1/2" or more caked onto their cars and such. I was living in Burnsville, first apt with my college roommate. Even with de-icer/hair-dryer/all the tricks, it took about half an hour to thaw out his locks/doors enough to get into his car. I was lucky enough to be the one who got the underground parking space.

It was definitely NOT ice you could have used an ice scraper on.

18 years ago, my freshmen year of college. I remember that storm causing professors shutting down classes two days after the weather had passed because the back roads weren't yet cleaned by the plows and the state patrol declared many roads impassable.

A buddy of mine set his windshield on fire with either lighter fluid or gasoline (it's been 20+ years and I forget which) one afternoon to melt the ice off so he could get out of the high school parking lot.

The last really bad ice storm that I can remember was around March of 1997. Took the power line right off of my parents' house, conduit and all. I remember hearing the "SCREEEECH" and then "KA-POW!!" right outside my bedroom, watching the alarm clock go blank as the wires crashed to the ground around 3 AM.

I have a buddy that did the same thing in college. Cracked his windshield something fierce. Ice was gone, though!

This didn't hurt the windshield one bit. The more I think about it, I think it was gas, because there was one hell of a poof, then he got in his ride like nothing ever happened, and away he went.

My aunt had moved to Gainesville, FLA for a few years. The first frost she saw, she saw neighbors pouring steaming hot water on the windshield. She couldn't bring herself to point out how stupid that was. :D

About 30 years ago I worked for a company in San Francisco. A bunch of us went out to a jobsite in PA on temporary assignment. Including many engineers who were "not born in this country." We had a few brainiacs carry cups of hot water out of their rooms to pour on the frost on the rental car windows at the hotel. These were ENGINEERS.:rolleyes:

Still no power, I can hear generators around me. 100,000 homes without power, wind chill advisory -20 tonight, actual temp around 0. Not going to get a lot done when its that cold.Going to fill up 5 or 6 gas cans, who knows how long. When the wind picks up lines they have already fixed are going down again.
