So the bantam tryout groups are posted. Jr is disappointed, as are Mrs and I, with the group he is in. I am Jr's harshest critic, not a hockey dad who thinks his kid is the next Gretzky, but I know these kids. There is another kid in group 3 who should be at the top of group 2, if not group 1. Another kid fell to group 4 and he is also a group 2 kid. It is absurd, I don't know what the hell they were looking at at the grading session.

Is this still with Edina or with the new school?

BTW this is still Edina. If he had gone to St. Louis Park where his school is he'd be a shoe in for a B1 team, which is his goal.

For Gopher fans there are 2 Hankinsons and a Williamson on the list. For Scarlet the Slatery is in group 1.

I did struggle to make the decision to stay here or head back, but in talking with my Dad, we both agreed that there really isn't much that I'm going to miss. Just some hashing out of possessions and the administrative stuff between her 3 sons. I will see about maybe getting up there in a couple weeks, or at the very least when I originally planned to get up there at thanksgiving.

It's not about the events that you are going to miss, it's about the emotional and spiritual support that is strengthened by having everyone together.

Everyone in our neighbor hood is older (45+) and white (except for the wife of the Steve Job's look-a-like that lives across the street who is from Thailand). That doesn't preclude them from being drunks, bullies, or crazy (or all three).

Brent brought up the minorities and young kids. I just asked if you lived in Brent's neighborhood, because he's drunk and old and white.

:( There really is no question. But if you want to ask it the answer is 'who do the parents know?' Add this to the list of things that I don't miss about kid team sports. In XC either you are faster or slower. Lil has a kid on his XC team who just quit bsbl. He played AAU ball in the upper age group (16-18) when he was 13, by invitation because he was so good. On JV he was hitting 600- highest numbers on V, JV and frosh teams. When someone got hurt they pulled up a frosh with # that weren't even close. The Dad asked what stats the book was showing and the coach conveniently lost the book. Parents were POd. Other parents POd. Bug scandal. The kid was much more pragmatic. He said something to the effect of well, that kid goes to * (the bsbl place who sponsors one of the local AAU teams) of course he would be picked first. I know I am not going to be picked because there are other kids that he wants to get experience. Time to do something else. His parents are heartbroken. He was considered a prospect for college ball. Word on the street is they thought he would stick with it so they wanted to boost the other kid. Oops. That didn't work well.

If you're batting .600 in high school ball, you should probably stick with it....just sayin'. Dumb decision.

Without quoting les' whole thing, I know all about the who you know part. But this instance makes even less sense. One of the mystery group 1 kids has a mom on the board and has played on high level teams before, but others don't have that connection. Some of the inexplicably low group kids are well connected. It's just kind of random this year. I see some of the same stuff on the peewee side too, although I don't know those kids as well. The son of one prominent NHL player who is on the board is in group 2 there, and this kid is big and skilled for his age. :confused:

Maybe they are going out of their way to make the appearance of impartiality or something. I'm just baffled.

ETA: I'm just hoping they are willing to fix these things during the scrimmages. We have 4 scrimmage skates and kids can be moved up or down as needed. In the past they have been a little reluctant to move too many kids, I hope they do the right thing this year cause i think they have a lot of kids out of place.

Sitting thru a no show right now, haven't heard back from her about why she's not here. Pretty much too late to even give her a half hour now anyways. Oh well, her loss. And I'll still get paid for it. :D

He got sick of not playing at the higher level. Pretty much figured he would run varsity XC or be playing JV ball the rest of his HS career. Didn't see the point of that.

Sometimes being on the board can make you a good pile of enemies, too. It might also depend on who is doing the selecting and how much they have watched the kids play. It wouldn't surprise me if the HS coach had a hand in this wanting to get players who will play for Edina on the top teams so that they can develop and grow together. Nothing is harder to "grade" in a bunch of drills and timed evals than "sport IQ" and having low-sport-IQ players is just as bad as having players who have below average skills.

Brent is a drinker, but he is far from being a drunk. He isn't on disability from work because his alcoholism prevents his from being able to do his job any longer (among other issues and events).

Coaches like that will face a player revolt eventually... What's the sense of playing if you aren't trying your best to win? Not that my hometown hasn't had its issues with social circle coaches.

Kings of a very small world.
