Re: Religion Thread: ...and suddenly, everyone's a theology scholar

Because they’re dumb. I’m sorry, they just are. Maybe dumb isn’t the right word but it’s the only one that comes to me right now.

Willfully ignorant, and trained by silver-tongued preachers to fear intellectuals (whom they aren't smart enough to connect with in the first place) as instruments of T3h DEVIL!

Re: Religion Thread: ...and suddenly, everyone's a theology scholar

So dumb? Not inquisitive?

In about 50% of cases, both.

Some have the brain cells to make decent money, but also have daddy/mommy issues. They were raised to fear both earthly and eternal punishment for even the most venial of transgressions. The "Spooky Mormon Hell Dream" song from The Book of Mormon does a great job making fun of this sort of guilt case.

And just so everyone is clear, I’m not saying religious people are dumb.

Re: Religion Thread: ...and suddenly, everyone's a theology scholar

I always wonder how people who allow church doctrine to control important personal decisions in their lives could be passionately against big government. And in the deep red states, it appears most people do just that.

They're involvement in their churches are entirely voluntarily activities, but they see government as compulsory. Also, and this might be a stretch, but the Roman gov't killed Jesus at the bequest of the Pharisees, so many of them see the government as an agent of evil.

They need a "higher power" to dictate their decisions, and IMO, it's because they don't want to speak for themselves.

They don't see their church as the money-sucking machine it is. It is ruled by God. The government however, is a completely man-made contraption that transparently takes money from their paycheck.

On top of that, there are people that they can vote for shouting all the dribble they hear each Sunday.

People have a lot more influence on what their state, local, and federal governments do than they have on church doctrine defined 17 centuries ago. And calling their passive acceptance of the faith-based social norms they marinated in while growing up "voluntary activities" is, well, amusing.

Ahh, good ol' Connecticut. Get out of Fairfield and New Haven Counties, and it's basically the South with generic Eastern accents. Western MA, too, except throw heroin into the mix.

30 miles outside of every city...

Good news: I did find an LGBT support group here, they have a center, and I will be hanging out there twice a week.

I also know not all Christians are jerks. Thinking of a woman who loves to hold my hand and give me tight hugs. Another woman gave me a code to Skirt Sports. Another woman gave me a makeup tutorial..

Tony Perkins: just as classy as you would expect.

More from the panderers of everybody's favorite moral code.

And even better.

Went to an LGBT support center tonight and hung out for a couple hours. Met some Episcopalians, and they are the exact opposite of what Kepler profiled there.

An interesting article on the death penalty and Catholic teaching. Towards the end, the author comes out against a private citizen usurping the state's right of capital punishment. In one sense I can agree, but in the case whether its him or me and death is the final outcome, I would rather it be him, rather than me.

Anyway the article. The document "trail" is at the end.

Seems you need to refresh your reading of The Catechism 2263-2267, specifically 2264. ;)
