Releasing a coach, when and why?

Re: Releasing a coach, when and why?

Maybe if Minnesota wins the National Championship this year we can re-define them as a successful program!

WHOA WHOA WHOA THERE! Lets not jump the gun here. I don't think you can be really successful unless you have been in the last 3 national championship games, winning 2, gone undefeated for a season and had at least a 62 game winning streak. Then, MAYBE, we could call it a successful program. Unless they lost a game this year then we have to reconsider.

Re: Releasing a coach, when and why?

As far as letting coaches go there are a couple of things to consider.

There is a jack*** on the radio here that says women's coaches are safe because nobody cares about womens sports. (you have to forgive him, his brain has been damaged by over exposure to CO from spending long periods in a garage, hence his self-named "garage logic". But there is some truth to this point in that if the men's team is drawing well & has millionaire fans donating bundles than a losing program crimps the schools income. With women's sports it is much less likely that there will be a huge drop off in ticket sales, seat licenses and donations.

The more important issue is what will a new coach do different/better? In womens hockey there are just not that many elite players and they are going to be drawn to a half dozen programs that have superior facilities and winning histories. If you are the coach of a team playing in a dump, being permitted time only when the weight room is not already in use by the boys and has only a hope of being .500 the administration is not going to be all hepped up to dump you and hire someone else because whats the point? We do need to fix this by getting more girls playing hockey.
