Rejoice!!!! Bloom County is back!!!!!

Re: Rejoice!!!! Bloom County is back!!!!!

Breathed didn't miss a single beat with the 25-year hiatus, it's quite surprisingly excellent.

I have had belly ache laughs with the Steve Dallas fertility god theme

Someone will have to explain that one to me. I didn't really read Bloom County when I was a kid, so I'd only read a few over the years that people took the time to piont out to me (he did quit 25 years ago, when I was 13), so old character references are lost on me.

I'm actually a little sad that his last couple haven't skewered The Donald like he'd started with his comeback run.

I'd actually recommend you pick up the book of the original run and read them straight through. It was really, really good, and you'll understand all the inside jokes then.

I bought the first collection, 1980-1982. We'll see how this goes. Much of the political references might be over my head if he's going after specific congressional members. After all, I was between 2 and 5 years old during that run of strips.

That's why god made google. :)

I started reading the Doonesbury compilations in my teens -- they began with events that are from when I was 6 or 7. You'll be surprised how much you can figure out just from context, and a search here or there will actually fill you in nicely. I'm finding the same thing now listening to Jack Benny's radio programs from the 30s through the 40s. The inside jokes and news references were almost impenetrable at first, but some research and patience and now I enjoy not only them but also all the movies made from the same period about ten times as much as before.

I think you'll find that the political humor will have stood the test of time. Senator Bedfellow is as relevant in 2015 as he was in 1980 and as he was in 1915, and likening conventions to circuses is eternal.

The areas where you might have more trouble would be the pop culture references, though I mostly remember the biggies like Michael Jackson, Madonna, Sean Penn beating up paparazzi, etc and I'm sure those won't be a problem.

Steve Dallas is back. 3rd day of his Brett Favre twitter video is epic. And he's badder than ever. Heeeeeelarious. It is so awesome to wake up and see a new Bloom County almost every day.

Re: Rejoice!!!! Bloom County is back!!!!!

Until you get to start reading that strip on a daily basis again, it's easy to forget about how really, really good it was.

It's amazing Breathed is still so funny and charming. Compare with Trudeau, who had become tiresome by 1980. Doonesbury has sucked monkey balls for twice as long as it was great. It's like Al Pacino.

Agreed. Breathed has a way of making you laugh at things even if he's poking a bit at something or someone you believe in or support. That's a rare gift.

Or to put it another way, whenever I read Bloom County I wish Breathed was my friend. That happens very rarely (Neil deGrasse Tyson, Wes Cecil, Rex Stout, Vi Hart, Richard Feynman, Jason Goodwin, Sean Carroll).

Ditto. Found them hilarious, and the book I have probably has the first strips run, up through Watergate, so before my time.

In the first strips BD still has the Y on his helmet. They include the immortal lines "You're taking the next bus back to Magnolia," "There are still a few bugs in the system," and "I'm just a French major from the Bronx."

That would be it, then.

So after reading today's comic, the first four letters of my surname are Berk...
