Re: Rebel Scum!!!
Only because he responded to me.

Only because he responded to me.

I'm a little disappointed that there were no Freddy Meyer jokes tossed in for good measure.
+1Dear USCHO,

I am seeking to move my fortune safely from Syria to the Promised Land. Canada. Please wire bank account information to me immediately. I promises to let you have some of my chemical weapons I mean moneys.
Please send freighter Ursva from Rurapente with large capacity to escort chemical weapons I mean money safely to Promised Land.
Sincerely,
Prince Akbar.
Hell, at this point, does it really matter who's side their on?? Nobody there really wants to play nice and sometimes the best solution over there seems to be to be, "well, we can drill for oil thru glass."They weren't rebels...they were Pro-Asad.
Forum software is something that is installed on a large number of web servers. If you can find an exploit, or there is a common misconfiguration that you can exploit, then that is an easy way to target thousands of websites with minimal effort. Its possible they just search for websites containing versions of bulletin board software with known exploits.
Supposedly the Syrian hackers are state-sponsored and may be getting assistance from Iran (not necessarily the ones that targeted USCHO -- they could be script kiddies) and in the event of an attack by the US they are threatening to target US companies (potentially causing limited economic harm -- even a basic denial of service attack can cost a lot in lost business opportunity) and I'm sure they would try to target US utilities and government systems as well
Most likely, some young dumba55 found an exploit via a hackers' site, borrowed/stole the script, and used it to insert a piece of code that automatically redirected the USCHO boards to his troll site.
And I would guess that keywords fueled it. See: pol threads.
Good point. (You could also blame the Association threads.)

That's pretty much it. vBulletin occasionally and unintentionally creates new holes. Most of the time we are able to apply security updates before someone gets to us. In this case, the harm they did was negligible, but boneheaded coding at vBulletin in one of their updates left a hole. The intruders were able to post a sticky note with the redirect code because of that.
So you're not a closet Syrian?![]()
No, but I have a Syrian in my closet.![]()
