Rare Tuesday Games

Re: Rare Tuesday Games

Has Norwich's Mitch Byrne always played defense as I have noticed him playing this year? He is listed as a forward. Did he primarily play defense last year? He is doing a very good job on the D and is certainly helping out with having Brandrup out the past few games.

Norwich wins 5-3 over Middlebury. Wild second period with a short handed goal followed by a close second shortie that Dean Niezgoda put in with a high stick (ruled no goal). Norwich with 3 power play goals out of 4.

Mitch was fourth line center for much of last season. This year he has played a lot of defense with the injuries, sickness and D not able to play.

Brandrup might be back Friday.

No shots in the second period. Wow.

They say Post is a new NCAA program, but they barely are playing any NCAA opponents.

I still don't see the point of a DII school adding hockey at this stage, unless they're going to play up to DI. For a for-profit school like Post, you would think this would be seen as a bad investment. They'll be eligible to compete for the NE-10 at the most...

You can't play up anymore. But a D-II school may choose to play with the big boys and the games count. They can't play down and have the games count.

What hockey will eventually do is mirror the women and have a National Collegiate Championship for D-I & D-II schools and end the playup.

BTW - Tuesday night games are not that rare. But you usually don't see the big boys playing mid week.

I thought they were still allowing play-ups in sports where the lower division doesn't sponsor a championship (such as DII hockey)?

2010-100 specifically ends new playups but grandfathers the old ones (for now). But NCAA by-laws allow a D-II school that does not have a championship in a particular sport (hockey) to declare for the D-I championship for a minimum of 2 years. They are still a D-II school though.

If you look @ the D-I RPI for women's ice hockey, you'll sometimes see St. Anselm, St. Michaels and Holy Cross listed with like 3 games played. Those are the games vs D-I or D-II teams that count towards the National Collegiate Championship. Because these schools do not play the minimum # of game required, their results are not figured into the calculation. Lindenwood is an example of a D-II school that counts.

The screw job for the playups will occur when the FBS schools will ram legislation down the hockey community throat and end all playups into D-I.
