Ralph Nader calls for ending athletic scholarships

Re: Ralph Nader calls for ending athletic scholarships

You're looking at it backwards from the NCAA's point of view - which, granted, I suppose to be the only way to consider this thread remotely worthwhile. They do not see it as leaving Division III out on the porch, but as focusing the vast majority of their efforts on the tremendously profitable entity that is Division I athletics. Which is one of many reasons why this will never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever happen.

Certainly, the NCAA would never willingly end athletic scholarships, but also doubt they are the ones who initiated Title IX. Any ban on athletic scholarships, is going to have to be legislative or it wont happen, there was time not all that long ago, when few would have thought the smoking bans we have today, would ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever happen. And a serious legislative deunionization effort, that would never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever happen. Ever is a long time.

I have lots of thoughts about this issue, and when I have time, I will bore you all to death with them. Not that I see reforms as likely to occur in my lifetime.

I'd be interested in hearing them someday. Big time college sports (especially basketball and football) is a "cesspool".

Re: Ralph Nader calls for ending athletic scholarships

IMO they should pay DI athletes a fair stipend in addition to their scholarships, considering how much revenue they generate for their schools (often at the expense of, you know, actually having an opportunity to study and graduate). It isn't enough to say "well they got a free education" when, in many cases, they really didn't.

DIII is fine.

Ralph Nader is a grandstanding idiot.

I agree to an extent. But when you start paying, do you do an across the board flat rate per player, per sport? For instance a swimmer at a UCONN (don't even know if they have it but go with it) earns the same scholarship (free) as Kemba Walker of the basketball team. Swimming at UCONN is no where to be seen, yet Kemba is putting people in the seats, buying jerseys ect ect...do we give the two the same amount. Go one further, the Williams kid from Arizona last night was just great. Probably the #1 pick this year....we pay him X amount of dollars...next year the next phenom freshman comes into the NCAA tourney and does what Williams or Jimmer or Kemba has done...and then some....do we pay him more? When does it stop?

Don't get me wrong I don't have an issue of students getting gifts for their work. I think some of the things that kids get are totally fine, but to put them on a pay scale is iffy. You've had teams get their championships taken away for team dinners, rides to the mall, and Montreal Canadians tickets. Recruiting wise, gifts should not be given to players to lure them in, but once they are already at the school and committed who cares. If I want to sell my jerseys, thats my choice. If I want to sell my ring, thats my choice. Whether I do it while in school or out of school.

Some of the things the NCAA has done over the past 20 years is mind boggling. Just look at this or this. Remember the old days when noisemakers, banners, flags and FUN was allowed at NCAA games. Pretty soon we might as well play these games in front of an empty house. We still go because we love our teams and we love our sport and we still have to go with the NCAA because they finance almost everything. Sad part is most of these morons never played an organized sport in their life, and don't understand what its about.

Re: Ralph Nader calls for ending athletic scholarships

Does anyone know exactly what the NCAA is? Is it technically a trade association? A partnership "owned" by the universities? Just curious

Remember, ultimately the NCAA is run by the college presidents. If the college presidents want to end scholarships, the NCAA will. If not, they won't.

It's really that simple.

I doubt any government legislation banning scholarships will hold up in any court.

Only if somebody finds that D-I and D-II college athletics are in violation of some antitrust law.

Follow the money. It's all about the money.

And when your college president wonders if the football coach can fire him, rather than the other way around, things are most certainly out of whack.

To be equitable, the amount of pay probably won't be compared sport to sport, but end up being comparable to the kids working the grounds crew, teaching assistants, or the students refereeing intramural games, etc. Not saying I agree, but is the most probable outcome should pay be afforded athletes.

Joe, why must you single the SEC out like this??? :)
