The Professional Women’s Hockey Players Association (PWHPA) is heading back on the ice in sunny Florida. The PWHPA All-Stars will use this as a training opportunity ahead of the recently announced Secret Dream Gap Tour showcase at Madison Square Garden; they will take part in five games against United States Premier Hockey League (USPHL) competition. This will be part of the USPHL’s “Hub City Tampa”. Hub City Tampa was developed by the USPHL—based in the northeastern part of the United States—as a means to ensure player safety during the COVID-19 pandemic while continuing its Tier-2 (NCDC) and Tier-3 (Premier, Elite) junior seasons. The PWHPA played six games inside of Hub City Tampa in January, sending an All-Star team to play against Premier and NCDC competition.

The PWHPA All-Star team will arrive in Tampa Bay on Monday, February 8th, and will depart on Thursday, February 18th, 2021. Players and staff will again stay at Saddlebrook Resort in Wesley Chapel, Florida and will reside in a pod of suites—away from all other teams— during the stay. All players and staff will follow strict COVID-19 protocols, which includes: the presentation of a negative COVID-19 test prior to arrival, an additional test upon arrival, multiple tests while on-site and a mandatory negative test before departing. Players and staff will also undergo daily wellness checks, while masks are mandatory at all times unless players are eating, in their rooms or on the ice. Following the tournament, PWHPA players selected to play in New York will enter a 7-day quarantine in preparation for the Secret Dream Gap Tour showcase; selected players will also be tested prior to travel to New York, upon arrival and between games.

The USPHL will have trained medical staff on-site throughout the duration of “Hub City Tampa”. The PWHPA All-Star team will also have a dedicated Athletic Trainer and Equipment Manager at their disposal during the duration of their stay.

During the course of their stay, the team will face off in five exhibition games against USPHL teams. Four of those games will be against Tier-2 NCDC opponents, while one game will be against the Tier-3 Premier League. In addition to game action, the PWHPA All-Star team will again take part in on-ice practice sessions and off-ice training.

The team will be coached and managed by Bill Flanagan, who is the head coach and GM of the New Hampshire Regional Training Hub in the PWHPA. Flanagan, who also coaches in the USPHL with the Northern Cyclones of the NCDC, also served in this role for the PWHPA’s first trip to Tampa Bay in January.

“This is another outstanding opportunity to train and play as a team against some high-level competition. The teams we will be playing are outstanding teams that have numerous Division 1 NCAA commits and players on the NHL Central Scouting ‘Watch List’ for the upcoming draft. When you add that competition to the top notch facilities that these women will again have access to, I’m extremely excited. Once again, these women will truly be able to focus on high-level hockey, and will be treated and taken care of like the professionals they are. This is a great opportunity to continue training in advance of the Dream Gap Tour,” Flanagan said.

The roster heading to Tampa Bay will contain players from the New Hampshire, Minnesota and Calgary Regional Training Hubs in the PWHPA. At forward, Abby Roque (MN), Amanda Kessel (NH), Brianna Decker (CGY), Delaney Belinskas (NH), Gigi Marvin (NH), Haley Skarupa (NH), Hannah Brandt (MN), Kelly Pannek (MN), Sophia Shaver (MN), Sydney Brodt (MN), Hayley Scamurra (NH), Samantha Donovan (MN) and Demi Crossman (MN) will head south.

Defensively, the team will consist of Jincy Dunne (NH), Savannah Harmon (MN), Megan Keller (NH), Jacquie Greco (NH) and Kali Flanagan (NH).

Katie Burt, Kimberly Sass, Alex Cavallini and Maddie Rooney will be the four goaltenders that the team carries to Tampa Bay. Burt, Sass and Cavallini are all based out of the New Hampshire Region, while Rooney is based out of Minnesota.

In all, nine Gold Medalists from Team USA’s 2018 Olympic Championship team will represent the PWHPA in Tampa Bay.

The full game schedule has been released and can be viewed here. The game action begins on Wednesday, February 10th, when the PWHPA All-Stars take on the Islanders Hockey Club of the NCDC at 2:00 pm from AdventHealth Center Ice. All games will be live scored on the USPHL’s official website, and will be streamed live on HockeyTV with veteran play-by-play voice Alex Thomas on the call. PWHPA’s February 13th game against Hitmen Premier will be available for free.

Stay tuned to ‘The Women’s Hockey Tribune’ for more details!

The PWHPA is going to want to make sure they don't mess up like the NWHL just did. It will be another way of showing which of those two competing groups is better in every way. The NWHL had a chance to really showcase themselves by being on national television and they messed up that golden opportunity.

Chicago Blackhawks, Toronto Maple Leafs and New York Rangers sign into agreements withPWHPA league. Games this weekend in Madison Square Garden and following week in United Center. Line-ups still being decided. Players from the New Hampshire area vs. Players from the Minnesota area.

Alongside local partner AT&T, Blackhawks partnership advances equity in hockey leading into the celebration of International Women’s Day

NBC Sports to present March 6 game nationally across U.S. on NBCSN featuring Kate Scott (play-by-play), A.J. Mleczko (analyst) and Kathryn Tappen (host)

CHICAGO (February 16, 2021) – The Professional Women’s Hockey Players Association (PWHPA) continued its momentum today announcing its third 2021 partnership with a National Hockey League team. The Chicago Blackhawks will host 2021 Secret® Dream Gap Tour games at the United Center on Saturday, March 6, and Fifth Third Arena on Sunday, March 7, as well as help market the showcase featuring the world’s best hockey players.

“Returning to Chicago builds upon past successes in women’s hockey at the United Center,” said Jayna Hefford, PWHPA operations consultant and 2018 Hockey Hall of Fame inductee. “Our athletes are excited to play at the United Center. More than the game, this partnership helps advance our mission of creating a sustainable pro women’s hockey league that showcases the outstanding skills of our athletes and allows young girls to dream just as the boys do today.”

“We are extremely proud for Chicago to be the only U.S. city to host the Secret® Dream Gap Tour games twice since PWHPA’s inception,” said Chicago Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot. “Chicago is the greatest sports town in the country, and we commend the many athletes who are breaking barriers and inspiring the next generation of young women who take the game and the athletic world to even greater heights.”

The Chicago showcase takes place on the anniversary weekend of the first-ever all-female crew broadcast of an NHL game, which was presented by NBC Sports and took place at the United Center on International Women’s Day last year (Blackhawks vs. St. Louis Blues on March 8, 2020). Two-time Olympic medalist and local Chicagoan Kendall Coyne Schofield – a PWHPA player and board member who will play in the Chicago showcase – was part of the NBC Sports broadcast crew for that game. Since that time she was hired as the Blackhawks’ first female Player Development Coach as well as formalized her Youth Hockey Growth Specialist role with the team. Building on these historic milestones, NBC Sports will present live coverage of the March 6 game on NBCSN in the U.S. at 2 p.m. CT. Kate Scott will handle play-by-play duties alongside NBC Sports’ A.J. Mleczko (analyst) and Kathryn Tappen (host).

“The Blackhawks are thrilled to once again welcome the PWHPA into our home campus, the United Center and community ice rink Fifth Third Arena, as they bring the exciting and competitive women’s game to a national audience from Chicago,” said Jaime Faulkner, Chicago Blackhawks President of Business Operations. “The outpouring of support from across the nation that both Kendall and I received after recently joining the Blackhawks organization shows that women having a seat at the table matters. Girls and young women, including my own daughters, are increasingly seeing themselves as part of our sport’s future, and we hope to sustain that momentum and visibility through this important partnership with the PWHPA and beyond.”

Supporting the series in Chicago, AT&T will serve as the local presenting sponsor.

Comprised of approximately 125 of the world’s best hockey players, the PWHPA was formed to advocate for and advance equity, fairness and opportunity in women’s professional hockey. Specifically, the group’s goal is to create a sustainable league that pays a living wage to players, provides appropriate elite-level resources and invests in marketing that showcases the players and game.

“Unlike any other platform, NHL teams can elevate women’s pro hockey to the next level,” said Mary-Kay Messier, a senior advisor to the PWHPA and VP of Global Marketing for Bauer Hockey. “NHL teams bring infrastructure and community, which attract corporate sponsors who want to align with the equity movement in sports. A more diverse game is a better game, and by partnering, NHL teams help grow a key hockey segment, make the game more welcoming and gain access to powerful female role models.”

On February 28 at 7 p.m. ET, the PWHPA will play the final game of the Dream Gap Tour New York showcase at Madison Square Garden before heading to Illinois for the Chicago showcase. The first game of the Chicago showcase will be played March 6 at 2 p.m. CT at the United Center, followed by a game on March 7 at 10:30 a.m. CT at Fifth Third Arena. The Toronto Maple Leafs committed on February 6 to a partnership with the PWHPA, including hosting a game when Canadian government regulations allow it.

Additional showcases for the PWHPA Dream Gap Tour will be added in the United States and Canada, and all games and logistics will adhere to local guidelines.

Rangers to make history hosting the first professional women’s game at the World’s Most Famous Arena – advancing equity and opportunity

NEW YORK CITY (February 3, 2021) – The Professional Women’s Hockey Players Association (PWHPA) continued its momentum today announcing its first 2021 partnership with a National Hockey League team. On February 28 at 7 p.m., the New York Rangers will host a 2021 Secret® Dream Gap Tour game and help market the showcase featuring the world’s best hockey players.

“This is a major milestone for women’s hockey and young girls who aspire to play professional hockey but don’t have the option to make it a career today,” said Jayna Hefford, PWHPA operations consultant. “NHL teams are uniquely positioned to elevate women’s hockey to the next level. They bring major brand strength, corporate relationships and access to a fan base. I want to thank the New York Rangers and Bauer Hockey for helping us reach this achievement. We’re even more excited to celebrate this milestone on National Girls and Women in Sports Day.”

Comprised of approximately 125 of the world’s best hockey players, the PWHPA was formed to advocate for and advance equity, fairness and opportunity in women’s professional hockey. Specifically, the group’s goal is to create a sustainable league that pays a living wage to players, provides appropriate elite-level resources (i.e. ice time, facilities, trainers, etc.) and invests in marketing that showcases the players and game.

“The talent level of women’s hockey is simply incredible, and the Rangers organization is honored to host this game. We’re excited to play even a small role in helping elevate visibility for the women’s game,” said John Davidson, President, New York Rangers. “We all love this sport so much and any opportunity the Rangers have to participate in its advancement is something we want to be a part of. It’s a win for everyone involved.”

Supporting the series at Madison Square Garden, Chase will serve as the presenting sponsor.

“We’re excited to be part of this historical moment that will help advance women in professional hockey and give these incredible players a platform to show off their skills to the world,” said Leslie Gillin, Chief Marketing Officer for JPMorgan Chase.

In hosting a game at Madison Square Garden, the Rangers are bringing women’s professional hockey to the World’s Most Famous Arena for the first time in history. Further, playing in the New York City media market delivers an added and much-needed level of exposure to women’s pro hockey.

With this announcement, the PWHPA is launching the 2021 Secret® Dream Gap Tour. The game at Madison Square Garden will kick off the tour and additional showcases will be added in the United States and Canada. Games and logistics will adhere to local guidelines.

“Investing in and advancing women’s hockey strengthens the game overall and creates a range of professional opportunities for women as coaches, front office executives and athletes,” said Mary-Kay Messier, VP of Global Marketing for Bauer Hockey who was recently appointed as a senior advisor to the PWHPA. “The women’s game is exciting to watch, as we’ve seen in international play, and is well-positioned to attract additional corporate partners that want to align their brand with advancing equity. The Rangers and Madison Square Garden combine to create a powerful platform for the women’s game.”

February 3, 2021, marks the 35[SUP]th[/SUP] annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day in the United States, which recognizes the importance of equal opportunities in sports for girls and women.

More hockey on tv! PWHPA announced their game on Sunday night at 7pm eastern will be on NHL Network and Sportsnet.

Rosters look fun, assuming they are correct. Jincy Dunne and Megan Keller on New Hampshire hub team will be going against the Minnesota squad that has Knight, Cameranesi, Roque, Brandt, Pankowski and more.

Looks more like the Wisconsin squad to me. Might have to cheer for the New Hampshire hub. <wink>;););)

The Saturday game is 8pm ET on ESPN3. The Sunday game will play at Madison Square Garden, on NHLHD Channel 215 DTV at 7pm ET.

What am I missing here, Lindsay?

Having only seen the third period of Saturday’s edition of the magical secret hub gap whamo pwhcabcxyz mystery tour (complete with nostalgic parental hand-held camera angles) which, in true exhausted scrimmage fashion, went from 1-1 to 5-1 FINAL in ten minutes, I don’t wonder that this play-by-play-free extravaganza hasn’t drawn more attention. Access to MSG Sunday night was almost as impossible, though less morally irresponsible, as access to the MA.gov vaccine site, so maybe this especially secret hub was fantastic, I don’t know, and maybe the PR types even came up with a fight song for Team Women’s Sports Foundation New Hampshire Region.
But I doubt it.

So much talent, and so little showcasing. Do the sponsors want this ship to sink? Maybe better hubs will follow, and I would love to have someone tell me I’ve got this one all wrong, but it can’t be true that any publicity is always better than no publicity at all.

I watched some of the game this evening, but quickly determined that the "telecast" was totally subpar. In fact it was far below what has become to be the norm of what we have come to expect in streamed games between two good high school teams here in Minnesota. Hopefully improvement will come quickly.

I think it was awesome to see these two teams battle it out in MSG. Regardless of the broadcast deficiencies, I view it as a "win" for women's hockey. I loved the Bauer commercial, and think it would be awesome if more runs of this commercial could be established during NHL games to help gain more exposure.

Yes Saturday night’s stream was very bad quality. All the comments above are valid. The skill of the players is clearly the best. Better than NW and from a raw perspective better than college. It’s clear they don’t get anywhere near enough games. There’s lots of talk about how this year men’s players are off their rhythm. That is the normal for women and it’s so effing tiresome. Pankowski who was so great two years ago in college... you can see her fading. Roque looks unreal.... she just graduated last year right? I fought through the stream on Saturday. In Sunday I asked my husband to add NHL Network to our tv package for the next two months. 25 dollars a month! NFL network is in a low tier package but NHL network.... you’d think it’s a sport played on Mars. There was a TON of positive this weekend. It meant a lot to the players to play in an nhl rink in their pro jerseys and not their National Team jerseys. But it’s funny I think about the Hockey is for Everyone slogan and the lack of accessibility to watch the best in the world due to lack of games and quality affiradable streams is really starting to p*iss me off. How is hockey for everyone if the best women don’t have anywhere to play, and people who live out of market have to pay an arm and a leg just to watch in tv? I’m not looking for anything for free, but this is nuts. Just have to keep working at it, there’s no other choice but yes I absolutely feel similar to those above.

Nice recap from Marisa Ingemi at Sportsnet. Talks about Roque and Decker and lots of gif highlights. Canada and US lag and lead each other in different ways re hockey, but Sportsnet seems to be upping their game and I do appreciate that. Games on Sportsnet, woho folks on big podcasts, so far at least 3 articles I’ve seen from Ingemi there. Hope they keep it up.

Briefly some other positives from this weekend:
1- Blake Bolden on color commentary. She knows hockey and knows women’s game. Loved listening to her.
2- The jerseys! Adidas Minnesota jerseys with the neon.
3- pw announced permanent shop online with some nice gear.
4- players were compensated. I don’t know the details, but player compensation is happening Inunderstamd. Secret getting in board with a million dollar contribution is great.
5- The previously mentioned Bauer commercials. Yes play them all the time!
6- Beautiful goals. Yes some defensive break downs but I am here for goalies getting victimized by passes coming from beneath the goal line while someone trucks down the slot.
7- Mark Messier foundation commitment. Good for him for starting a convo and putting some money down.
8- The Olympians going off on night 2. Goals for Decker (2), Skarupa, Kessel, Knight, Coyne, and maybe some Olympic foreshadowing : Roque.
9- Knowing they will be playing again next weekend on a more accessible channel, NBC SportsNet.

If you want to follow the PW tour, best I’ve found is subscribing to their email updates.

Until it’s a league with an actual season instead of a tour, I’m not much interested. I’ll take what the NWHL was able to do pre-COVID - an actual season with playoffs and a championship. I believe that attracts more people to the sport than showcase events. I can follow a season and root for my team. That’s more interesting even if some of the world’s best players aren’t playing.

Of course, what really needs to happen is for all of the parties involved to get their crap together and have a league that does include the best players in the world.

Yes I agree with this sentiment. If there is no PW league post 22 Olympics, that’s a real problem. Will also be interesting to see what happens next year when half their group is centralized, another challenge for them to sort out.

It does seem significant, material strides are being made in sponsorships, though this is true on NW side too.
