PWHL Rosters & Season

Ahh if it’s only for today it’s nbd. A ponytail or braid covering part of a name never bothered me, but I know not all agree.

Yeah, I feel the same way - it's not bad to have a letter or two obscured by the ponytail or braid, and it's still easier to see the name when it's at the top.

Headed to the PW game today in Pittsburgh, can’t wait. My daughter convinced me to wear my Mercyhurst jersey. Another friend from Mercyhurst is going too and is going to try to dig hers up. Glad she convinced us, as the Lakers are a special part of women’s hockey in PA, and in fact will be represented on ice by Alexa Vasko. What a special day…. The latest iteration of pro hockey having a day in PA.

Yesterday the PW had 13,736 at Detroit. A US pro women’s attendance record. Not sure if that is the all time US record. Knight with a goal and a shootout goal in a Boston win over Ottawa.

A successful weekend in Detroit and Pittsburgh for the PWHL!

Also, the league has announced two trades at today's trade deadline:
- Lexie Adzija (F) and rights to Caitrin Lonergan (F, drafted but not signed) go from Ottawa to Boston; Shiann Darkangelo (F) goes from Boston to Ottawa
- - Adzija has 8 pts in 17 games this season (beginning with a 5-game point streak) and is popular with fans. Two-time Patty Kaz finalist Lonergan from Roslindale, MA had 18 pts in 23 games with the CT Whale last season.
- - Darkangelo has 8+ seasons of professional experience, scored 25 pts in 24 games last season with the Isobel Cup champions Toronto Six and was their captain, and this season has been quiet with 1 assist in 17 games.

- Amanda Boulier (D) goes from Ottawa to Montreal; Tereza Vanisova (F) goes from Montreal to Ottawa
- - Boulier was on a 1-year contract with Ottawa and ranked 3rd among Ottawa defenders with 6 pts in 17 games
- - Vanisova started on Montreal's top line, was on a 2-year contract, and had 10 pts in 17 games

Did anyone see that Ian Kennedy was talking about the need to make leadership changes with New York? I thought it was comical, let's at least get through a full season for we start dropping the ax on people.

I think there is a bit of “money is no object “ mentality among some fans/writers. I don’t know what NY needs, is it possible the level of play has a catch up factor for the coach? Hopefully they can get things going. Hailey Salvian wrote about how they ride certain players real hard for ice time and don’t use Guguere or Aurard nearly much as you’d think.

i watched Montreal without Poulin on Sunday. It was a season low in shots for Montreal. There’s definitely room to add depth to some of these squads with this years graduating class.

To coach in NY, Howie Draper took a leave of absence from coaching U of Alberta rather than resigning that job; so, there is the thought that he could return there at the end of the season. That said, he could probably return there even if NY "replaces him," so to speak, before the end of the season. Minnesota had a coach resign suddenly and has done well with Ken Klee. I read that Draper is a nice guy and is just maybe sticking to systems that aren't working. New York can still make the playoffs. Yes, Hailey Salvian wrote that there seems to be a coaching issue.

I'm going to see them tonight vs Ottawa and hoping NY gets 3 points, as well as hoping to collect more signatures on my NY jersey!

Well, the only 3 points were won by Ottawa in their 3-0 win over New York. It was a good time, though; my mother and I met three players along with a family from Micah Zandee-Hart's hometown and a fellow loyal Yale fan too.

glad you had fun! I watched a bit on tv. So nice to just go to a channel and there it is.

Toronto has turned their season around and has won 11 games in a row. Boston and New York are on the other side of the scale in 5th and 6th respectively - New York is looking to snap their own losing streak. Montreal is currently middle of the pack, Ottawa has risen a bit, and Minnesota and Toronto are not far apart from each other for 1st.

Just watched on YouTube as this afternoon's Ottawa-Toronto game wrapped up. It was played in front of an intense Ottawa crowd of about 8448. Toronto scored a fluky goal on Maschmeyer to pull within 1 with several minutes left. Daryl Watts, however, completed a hat trick with a goal on the empty net, and Ottawa won 5-3, snapping Toronto's winning streak at 11 games. Ottawa pulls farther ahead of Boston and New York in the race to make the playoffs.

The PWHL announced that its championship trophy will be called the Walter Cup, named after the family of Mark and Kimbra Walter who are financing the league. It is 24 inches tall and about 35 pounds. So, they didn't choose to carry on the Isobel or the Clarkson Cup.

PWHL playoff format is two rounds (semifinals and finals), with best-of-five series in each round. The top four teams make the playoffs, and the #1 seed gets to pick its opponent for the semifinals. There are currently 5 games left for each team to play in the regular season after the international break. The 42-player draft will be after the playoffs and will take place in mid-June, according to the league's announced info.

I hope the Lady Isobel is safe wherever it is...

Hockey hall of fame. Izzy’s doing ok!

Is there 2 Stanley cups? The one at the HHOF and the one the current champ team has?

I would LOVE to visit the Walter Cup

The current team doesn't keep the Stanley Cup. They get to borrow it for the time it takes for each player to have a day with it. Then, it goes back to the Hall of Fame.

They can only pick between the third and fourth place teams. They cannot pick the second place team, since they also earned the right for home-ice advantage.

I recommend a trip to Toronto. The Hockey Hall of Fame is just one pleasant diversion in an urban area with lots of pleasant diversions.

In the Grand Hall they have THE Stanley Cup trophy on display which turns out only to be the current Stanley Cup. In the adjacent vault there is the original Stanley Cup, which they say is the actual original Cup. When the current trophy was created they used a replica which is very similar buy not identical to the original. The original is slightly larger and obviously does not have the rings which are part of the current trophy. As regards the current trophy I have heard that there is an "actual" Stanley Cup and a "replica" Stanley Cup.

If the question is how many Stanley Cups are there the answer is clearly more than one.

I have what I think is a nice photo of me in the Grand Hall standing next to the Stanley Cup trophy.

Every hockey fan should do this.

Correct.

"There are actually three Stanley Cups: the original bowl of the "Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup", the authenticated "Presentation Cup", and the spelling-corrected "Permanent Cup" on display at the Hockey Hall of Fame whenever the Presentation Cup is not available. While the NHL has maintained control over the trophy itself and its associated trademarks, the NHL does not actually own the trophy but uses it by agreement with the two Canadian trustees of the cup. The NHL has registered trademarks associated with the name and likeness of the Stanley Cup, although there has been dispute as to whether the league has the right to own trademarks associated with a trophy that it does not own."

Lol, there are a lot of Stanley cups! Thanks both for the info. Yes I’ve been there a few tames. Amazing place. We’ll see what presence the PW establishes there, it would be cool to see the Walter cup or a version thereof.

Can we talk about how special Coyne Schofield is for a second. Whew. Both in the pw and her USA return…. Plays with so much heart. A goal vs the Swiss net front where she just wanted it more than the Swiss gal defending, and now sets up Edwards with a shorty for her second of the night. Not to mention her role in building the pw. Not wearing a letter this tourney for USA but she is a favorite of mine for sure.
