Purple Mavericks vs. Red Mavericks 12/14-15 in Omaha

Re: Purple Mavericks vs. Red Mavericks 12/14-15 in Omaha

We still have a half of season left, so anything can happen. The Final Five is a long way away, and we need to stay consistent every game. With that being said, I love the way this team plays. They work hard and play together, which makes for exciting hockey. I hope we can show up in St. Paul this year, it's been a long drought.

Re: Purple Mavericks vs. Red Mavericks 12/14-15 in Omaha

You should buy tickets for the Final Five every year, regardless if the Mavs play! I've been going to every one since 2001, flown up from Texas for the last 3

Re: Purple Mavericks vs. Red Mavericks 12/14-15 in Omaha

Hats off to the Purple Mavs, but that was a poorly played game by both teams, just a worse one by our guys. That was EASILY the worst defensive game we've played all season. Disappointing because we have played well, otherwise.

I saw the between periods (2nd & 3rd) interview on the TV monitor in the arena with Mike Hastings and he was not happy and said that he thought 2 of MS-M's goals to that point were lucky bounces and that he was very concerned about how much we were controlling the puck.

We've now had three goals waved off now in the last two games, by the way.

A lot of people sing UNO defenseman Andrej Sustr's praises (I'm not a big fan), but, he had a horrifying game. He committed a couple stupid penalties and MS-M capitalized immediately both times. Plus, he was on the ice for 2 other Purple Maverick goals as well and was beaten badly on the shorty they got in the 3rd period and he coughed up another breakaway, besides, that MSM didn't score on.

UNO defenseman Michael Young? On the ice for 5 of Mankato's 6 goals! That includes the shorty.

I felt bad for John Faulkner, who got jerked and didn't really even do anything to deserve it.

The other overriding theme was that even though I thought we got the better scoring chances overall (and lost, obviously), we also, I thought, got out-hustled in the game quite a bit. But, there were some lengthy stretches where I thought we were totally controlling the play. Ironically, we didn't score during any of those times. Such is life, sometimes.

I think our guys, on some level, may have mailed this one in.

Congrats to the Purple Cows for seeing the door opened a crack and walking through, however, that was far from a masterpiece on your side of the ledger, either. You guys were unbelievably sloppy with the puck in your end. You're really pretty fortunate we didn't score at least a couple more than we did.

A road win is a road win, though.

Ah, well, we'll try and get'em tomorrow. I have serious doubts that we'll play that poorly tomorrow night.

Re: Purple Mavericks vs. Red Mavericks 12/14-15 in Omaha

I have a theory that good teams find ways to win games.

That being said, I'm not sure that we are a good team yet. But we scored when we needed to. Williams stepped up when he needed to.

I anticipate a completely different game tomorrow night.

Frustrating part for me is that I wanted to go down to Omaha. Wife didn't want to. Should have gone anyway.

Sounds like you watch two pretty bad hockey teams. UNO-M will have to shore up their defense and stay out of the box. We'll see what happens tomorrow.

That's a valid school of thought and if you guys come out tomorrow night and the game is a replay of tonight, I will, at that point, attribute it more to your line of thinking.

That said, neither team is winning the WCHA, the Final 5, or even an NCAA tournament game if tonight was representative of what either team really is. Just a horrible defensive game by both teams. We were just worse than you tonight, and, by quite a bit, too.

I think Coach Blais realized he was in a scorefest and that's the reason he pulled the goalie with over 7 1/2 left to play, which, by the way, is not unprecedented for him to do "so early" although I believe tonight set a new "record" for the earliest.

Re: Purple Mavericks vs. Red Mavericks 12/14-15 in Omaha

I don't know if it's a good idea to say that both teams played like crap. One got twice as many goals as the other. many times UNO got in front of Williams there was a herd of purple cows breaking up the play. I also noticed a little more speed out of them purple guys tonight. It also seemed like another episode of UNO misjudging the other team as a lesser foe and getting punished for it.

Re: Purple Mavericks vs. Red Mavericks 12/14-15 in Omaha

Blais has done it during the first or second periods before when his team was on the PP dominating. He's a gambler.

Hence, the reason I said I thought we might have mailed it in.

It was a crazy game with an even crazier start, really. In the first 90 seconds of the game, UNO scored, then had another goal waved off and while I was waiting for the review, I noticed the SOG were already 3-2 Mankato at that point.

Like I said, even Mike Hastings himself wasn't happy and said so between the 2nd and 3rd periods.

There were 4 breakaways in the game! Two by each team. I lost track of the number of odd man rushes.

We've won games I wasn't proud of, either. The only point I was trying to make is that, even though they won, if I were a Mankato fan, I'd not be hanging my season's hat on that effort. The final score of that game could have EASILY been 7-6, or some such thing. I've not seen many games where fewer good or great scoring chances didn't go in like this one had. Both teams missed basically empty nets twice, too.

This game was supposed to be sort of a watershed moment for them this season so far and, yeah, they won, but they most assuredly did not play real well. I'm not drawing a whole lot from our loss, since it's the first poorly played game we've really had all season and, if I were a Minnesota State fan, I wouldn't be thinking we're going to win the WCHA based on the outcome of this game, either.

I'm not trying to denigrate them in any way, I'm just trying to be honest based on what I witnessed.

WE looked like what comes out of a Maverick's rear end, however.

As a Minnesota State fan, I'm proud of the way we responded, capitalized on our chances, and won a gritty game on the road. I agree we didn't look great tonight; but we got two gigantic points, and we showed we can beat a quality opponent when that has been the question the last month.

But in part, wasn't this a couple of teams looking for breakaways? And I would agree, there were an extraordinary amount of odd man rushes, and it made me feel like we weren't playing defense, but aren't these just two teams who like to play that way? We're not Wisconsin, looking to win every game 2-1.

That said, I liked the win, but we were lucky not to give up a bunch more goals. Our will (and our Williams) was impressive, but our defensemen were exposed as being painfully slow. Archibald being super fast only made that look worse.

Re: Purple Mavericks vs. Red Mavericks 12/14-15 in Omaha

I thought Williams was lucky he didn't give up more goals with the way he ws s giving up dome pre itty meaty rebounds. Buchanan had a pretty bad game. He took bad angles 3times as uno was coming down the wing on rushes. It's definitely connectable with him as he's very young. Last night was a good lesson though.

RedCows, this isn't really a new phenomenon for you. I've seen your posts for the last 3 weeks against Minnesota, then Saint Cloud and now the Mavs. There are two common points you seem to make. First, you try to discredit the other team's success in one way or the other and then if they win you either sandbag or try to continue to discredit the other team. Just an observation.

A good lesson, yes; and we got two points. That's what good teams do.

I don't recall ever seeing any Minnesota State fan saying that we are going to win the WCHA. All you've been saying is how bad both teams played, and how Minnesota State should realize they are not that good. Well, whether or not the game was played error free on either part, somebody had to get the points. I would think most MN State fans are very happy with the outcome. Watching the game, I could see why Hastings wasn't happy, as our defense gave up the most quality scoring chances since the St. Cloud series. Most people picked us to finish 11th or 12th, and I will say that I do not see this happening.

Re: Purple Mavericks vs. Red Mavericks 12/14-15 in Omaha

Thanks to MavFan14, you prevented me from wasting a fantasy goalie start. Post the lineups again tonight and you are officially cool ****

Red Cows: tell your team to stop parking in the crease and kicking goals in and they won't keep getting called back.

Let's go 'Kato!

Congrats to the the Purple Mav on the win, they did what they needed to do. All the goalies looked shaky last night, including Williams. You knew at some point that giving up 3 goals meant Blais is going to pull the goalie, whether that be Faulkner of Stolarz. UNO did not play their best game on defense last night but that hardly matters, as Minnesota State took advantage of the situation and capitalized (also whenever you lose you did not play your best game, so...). It was one game, let's see how the teams come out and respond to last night.

That's interesting, considering I was hardly complimentary of my own team in this case.

That's a backhanded way of degrading the opponent. "Yeah, we lost, but we REALLY played bad!" Translation: "You guys would have lost if we had just played an average game."
