The attendance issue is always brought up over on the Friar basketball forums and I think one of the interesting points people bring up is that the school is around 60/40-female/male. Surveying the crowd the past couple of home games when school is in session, I'd say the majority of the student section is female. This comes off sexist but maybe they just aren't invested in the game as much? Within the few pockets of rowdy fans you rarely see a girl. I don't think this is the reason as when I went to school the loudest person in the student section was a female, but the argument has been brought up. I thought the student section was very full for the Lowell game, but the students, regardless if they were male or female, aren't the liquored up rowdy fan base that you would like to see with a top 20 team. I'll be more mindful of the superfraud student section tonight when I head up to Conte.

BC's student section is a mix for sure. I always see young women front and center on both sides of the rink at Kelley. Same at UNH and BU.

PC is a basketball school and always will be. It pains me to admit that after years of wanting things to be different but there is no getting around it. When I attended PC 100 years ago the hockey team was good and students would still leave early to get to Brad's, Eagles or Geister's.

Then as it is today, if there was a hoop game scheduled for the same night, forget it. Students will bus down to the Dunk in a heartbeat instead of walking across campus to attend a free game. The hockey attendance is reduced to family and friends only when the hoop team is playing. I also agree the Providence Bruins contributes to the lack of attendance but PC does next to nothing to promote a hockey crowd.

It's a shame because the program is on the rise. I actually think the large number of young woman attending the hockey games is a very positive thing. The guys will go where the women are and if women are going to the games it only helps to attract more fans. BTW some of the female students I've noticed over the years are as good if not better fans when it comes to interest and being vocal. Maybe the ladies will be the spark that turns the focus back to PC hockey games being an event worth regularly attending.

Over the years I have made three observations about student attendance at PC hockey. One drop-off was when students no longer had to buy tickets to come to games. There was a time students would line up to get season tickets and not be frozen out when PC was the hottest hockey ticket in town. When you no longer have an investment in the event, there is no motivating factor to go. The advent of the Providence Bruins definitely affected attendance at PC hockey, but I saw that affecting the general public more than the students. I believe the B's are still a factor in attendance. The third factor is the bandwagon fan. People like to follow a winner. Once the program began its slide to mediocrity and then to the depths of college hockey, the attendance of both students and general public slid with it.

I know some student activity fee "covers" admission to the games, but students do not think of it has coming out of their pockets on game night. As this team continues its upswing, interest will increase with it. However, as long as students have no skin in the game, they will wait until the last minute to decide to come and then, only if it is the best option at the moment.

As to theprofromdover's question, I have a better option tonight.... ;)

I mean.......this female right here traveled to North Dakota for two games and is traveling to Indiana for two more so I'd say I'm fairly invested. I was never really a rowdy fan, so to speak, but I have a high pitched voice that doesn't really carry that well. Plus I'm just not someone who yells a lot.

I get what you're saying though. People go to games to have a good time, and the first two and a half-ish years of my college experience, the team was terrible. I went because I loved hockey and I didn't want the team to play to an empty arena. They got good by my senior year, but so did the basketball team and everyone had basically written off the hockey team. People also weren't really aware of when the games actually were. Lots of people didn't realize that because there was a game on Friday, there may also be a game on Saturday. (Basketball never has back to back nights unless it's a tournament.) Additionally, the school did a horrible job at making sure there was actually a good experience at the games. Security would tell students to sit down and be quiet. There wasn't really ever promotions (apart from random t-shirt night and thundersticks--wooooo) and the in-arena experience was just plain boring compared to other arenas. (UVM, for instance, gives away food at every possible time. I thought that was cool.)

If I were PC, I'd look to other schools and copy their techniques to get students in the building--because what they're doing really isn't working.

And ... NH native? I thought Jon was a Maine boy.

In any event, son of a UNH "legend" or not, NH native or not, I'd have been pleased to see him calling the Whitt home.

Edit: the last NH native I begrudged PC was Jon Rhealt. What is it with PC and Jons? Jon?

Time to put this one behind them. The opportunity now is ahead. All the teams left are behind them, all winnable games even those at ND. Won't be easy but it's all in front of them to gain a top 4 spot and home ice

At worst, PC should go 6-2 down the stretch or better. Anything less than that and it has to be a disappointment!

Gillies let in a terribly soft goal to Tuch from 40 feet out and I wasn't too pleased with the Hanifin goal at all. The two dmen can't get split on that play and then to get beat five hole from that close is disappointing.

Demko wasn't on his game either tonight as both PC's goal were soft. If the first one was tipped, I take that back on the first goal.

You can call that chit soft all you want. Fact is, if Gillies isn't standing on his head tonight, BC scores 6 or 8 goals. Gilmour stood 3 feet in front of the crease in the third and played ping pong with Gilies... shot, save; shot, save; shot, save. I think PC's D was out having a few burgers.

Gillies... not soft.
PC's D... baby's arse soft.

Anyway, great game tonight. Me thinks we haven't seen the last of the Friars.

We are still ahead of BC in the PWR and have two games in hand in Hockey East play...let's continue to roll and put UConn away next week

The "D" has had some issues last few games with giving up the puck easily in the defensive zone for some wide open opportunities. Florentino was on the ice for all 3 goals last night from what I read in other reports...not good...of course also saw he assisted on the 2 Friar goals...

Need to tighten the D up a bit down the stretch. I'd take 6-2. 8 games left 4 at home 4 on the road.

Kind of interesting how the Friars finish with 2 at home against Maine. Remember last year when the Friars had to go up to Alfond trying to get home ice, sweeping both games...Maine will remember that

Merrimack beat UML last night, need to keep an eye out for Merrimack in the stretch run

This is one line from a Zlax post on the BC thread

I think ultimately this the problem. Also known as the best defense is a good offense, in other words keep a bit of the pressure on the other team and your defense isn't spending too much time defending. Now last night give the BC defense much of the credit for limiting pc's chances. You also can say winning a game at a place BC is part of the process of changing the losing culture The Fred's referenced in the last week. However unless A guy like Mauerman or Pinho put up a streak of scoring we are going to scratch all year and then that means we need to limit the turnovers and defensive mistakes

As far as long term solving the problem we should be adding Erik Foley, who is projecting well in scouting ratings and is averaging a point a game in the USHL. We also get Bryan Lemos, who is a level lower on the USHL scoring charts than Foley, but he does seem to be scoring more goals than he did last year in the USPHL. Also while I will take his numbers with a major grain of salt after the DeJersey and Eppich disappointments, Tommy Aldsworth is like 2nd in the BCHL in goals. If unlike the other two he is willing to get down and dirty and Leman can put him in the right situation he should be okay. Anyway he would be replacing Demo's offense. Luke is going to be a major loss and a blue collar Mauerman with his experience is hard for a freshman to replace

Anyone else recognizing that Mauermann is taking a ton of penalties now? He won the sportsmanship award last year in Hockey East and this year is going into scrums after whistles and picking up cheap penalties.

Maybe it is frustration with him not doing as well as expected this year. I do think Luke is the biggest loss for PC after this year. Does Noel leave? He is a redshirt junior and probably has a few teams willing to give him a free agent contract...

Good news is PC is in the top 4 after this weekend with games in hand on everybody above them...

You can't play 8 minutes of very good hockey and expect to win a game like that. You guys should get down on your knees and give thanks for Gillies.

I do think because we have Gillies in net the "D" and the rest of the team have cut back on their responsibilities resulting either a goal or another great save by Jon, back checking is only a hockey term at PC not a job they actually do......time for the entire team to get back to what makes a team great, basic hockey.

Giving up around 40 shots on goal is too many for any defense...the scoreboard was way off all night at BC so I don't remember the final numbers.
