Programs Starving for a Title

Re: Programs Starving for a Title

What are other D-I programs that have title droughts or have never won? Please talk about how these teams were close (or not close to winning it).

Merrimack went Division 1 Independent in the mid-80s and joined Hockey East in the early 90s. They've never won a league title or a national championship at the Division 1 level.

They did make it past Northeastern in the first round of the NCAAs in 1988, but fell to eventual champ Lake Superior in the next round. There were high hopes to make the Final Four this year, but fell to Notre Dame in a regional game with several weird bounces in it.

I hope Tech gets good soon...
They could use a title.
CC hopefully will keep their streak going.
I guess the ECAC is due, hopefully its RPI, but not next year as DU looks like they may be stacked next year.

I'm with you on this one. I feel sorry for Tech. They need to find inspiration from teams like Merrimack, Western Mich., and Union. Those programs all turned it around!

Re: Programs Starving for a Title

I'd have to think St. Cloud State would be hungry for a title. Just won their first NCAA game after many appearances, and have attracted some real talent in the past few seasons (Nodl, Roe, Lasch, etc). They may be ready to take that next step sometime soon. Also being in Minnesota where other schools, notably Minnesota and Duluth have had at the national level, and the recent FF appearance by Bemidji, the Huskies seem like a team who would be pretty hungry for a title.

Well said umass. I certainly agree that a team like UNH may have more "rights" to being hungry for a title based on their history, but as an SCSU fan this post explains my sentiments to a T.

Cant put Merrimack anywhere near the conversation if were not putting Miami there. Miami has a longer history in every category over merrimack. And dont talk to us about crazy bounces lol...

Re: Programs Starving for a Title

Here's a little conspiracy to give hope to the starving.

Considering the demise of college hockey due to the formation of the B1G. How would you save NCAA hockey? Obviously, defeat the B1G! But would you use teams that have already proven they can win or use new teams that have never won? I would think using the championship-less would give bigger bang for your buck.

Consider this seasons tourney;
EAST - UMD, Yale, Union, AFA= 0 NC's
N.East- ND, Miami, UNH, Merr.= 0 NC's
WEST- BC, CC. UM, UNO = 15 NC's
Midwest- UND, Denver, RPI, WMU= 16 NC's.

Never before have the 'have not's' been so seperated from the 'have's'. In fact, since the start of the 16 team, 4 regional format (2003) there has never been a regional without a former Champ, NEVER!! That's 8 years x 4 regionals = 32 regionals total. This year we had 2!!! And further, they were aligned to guarantee a 'have not' in the Title game.

Is the NCAA conspiring to 'spread the wealth'?;)

Yeah... or it was math. One of the two.

Re: Programs Starving for a Title

Which would be? Early 30's? With the first National Championship game being played in 1948? (if I heard the Frozen Four trivia correctly)

Correct. They all have D1 programs that have existed in some capacity since the early 1930s.

I can't believe no one has said UND or Michigan. Those two teams keep taking the head cheerleader to the prom and wind up going home early, bitterly disappointed. Most of the other teams are only hopeful. The crushed look on the faces of the Sioux fans was almost as great as the elation of the Bulldogs.

Now if I had to pick a virgin team I'd pick UNH. It would be a shame to lose the nickname though.

UND is def starving for one right now. I'd say Minnesota would be up there too. And Mich Tech will turn it around eventually.

Reading is tough.

Since the NCAA is fond of saying that most of the student-athletes won't be turning pro, I think it's like 15 - 3 in Supreme Court justices favoring the East.

Re: Programs Starving for a Title

A total of eighteen teams have won the national championship. If it's been more than that many years since a program won the national championship, then the program is starving for a title.

Re: Programs Starving for a Title

The two teams I'd like to see win it all would be Miami (because I think they deserve it) and UNH (because I live in NH). Miami's early departures have been due to bad puck luck (BC, BU), while UNH has just underachieved.

Re: Programs Starving for a Title

Good God, could Brown ever use a title. Even an ECAC title would be great at this point.

Hell, I wouldn't complain if we finished in the top half of the conference!

You're letting the one drunk fan stereotype your view of all Miami fans? If I did that with Michigan fans I met they are all pretty nice :D
