Re: Problems with Hockey Parents
Good for you! It is very sad to hear stories like that.
My son's team was playing in the state tournament 2nd yr squirts. He played on a pretty small team- no depth, hand picked type deal (we were oblivious of this until later). One of the D kids really had a tough time pivoting and was taking penalties a lot because he was out of position. The kid wasn't the brightest lightbulb- good kid but didn't take direction well. The coach benched him for a good part of the 3rd period and my kid took a lot of his shifts. The Dad was just insanely PO'd (he was well lubricated, not unusual for him) and told everyone just what he thought. Why wasLittle Johnny sitting? Why was L'Il (my kid) taking those shifts? He paid for just as much ice time, he drove all this way for nothing, etc. He accosted the coach who I think attempted to explain that little Johnny was not making good decisions and not listening to what he was told.
When the kids got on the ice the next day the Dad started from across the rink yelling at the top of his lungs. All thru warm-ups into the first period. 'Hit em, 'Johnny'! You show them what aggressive is, I don't care if you get in the box, You show 'em!" and more to that effect. The guy was well lit. The poor kid had the coach telling him one thing and the Dad acting like a Maniac. The coach finally yelled at the top of his lungs, " 'Big Johnny' shut up. If you don't your kid will be benched for the rest of the year!" He then turned to the kid and told him if he listened to his Dad or even turned his head in that direction then he was benched. THe poor kid!
After this the coach told everyone who would listen that he would never coach this kid again. At length. The next year, same coach, my kid got cut and 'Little Johnny' got the D slot. Never could figure that out. The rationale we were given- L'il was too little for that level.
I witnessed first hand(as my daughter played for the winning team),a game where we mercied the team in the first period,as the players came off the rink one dad grabbed his son by the shirt collar and jerked him off his feet and slammed him into/onto a medal picnic bench and proceeded to spew profanities at his son,2"from his face.....my first thought was where is the support? he just got thumped and he was visibly upset at the loss and the very person he should be able to get comfort and reassurance from is going balastic in front of everyone and causing even more embarassment!!! I am sure the dad was embarassed at his son's performance so that is how he decided to handle it....
I couldnt stand by and watch, i had to intervene even though i didnt know them at all.......needless to say the dad wasnt too happy with me and told me to mind my own business...which i didnt...
sad very sad scenario...sometimes parents get so caught up,they forget the important things in life......and having the best player in the world...isnt it! Always being there for your child is.....
