Probably off topic - NHL Playoff coverage

Re: Probably off topic - NHL Playoff coverage

Saturday nites in Potsdam were either Clarkson hockey or HNIC - we were lucky enough to get Montreal and Hamilton CBC stations (plus that station in Hull, but that's a different story) so we'd get Toronto and Montreal home games. Weren't HNIC games also on Wednesday??

Wednesday, and later on almost all Montreal home games were covered regionally (Quebec-wide) with the inimitable Dick Irvin on the PBP. There was a hockey announcer who knew the game.

This is a saucer pass.

The "half wall" or "half boards" refer to this part of the rink. It's just another point of reference a play-by-play man can use.

50-50 battles...that's self explanatory. An equal battle for the puck. When two opposing players are trying to gain possession of a loose puck without one having a clear advantage over the other (i.e. both players skate at the puck from an equal distance or meet along the boards at the same time, not when one player takes a loose puck while another is in pursuit, where you an't expect the second player to gain possession most of the time).

Uhhh...TY but not needed . :)

Re: Probably off topic - NHL Playoff coverage

A debate about hockey broadcasters and no one alerted me? Here's how I see it...

A pbp guy should expand his vocabulary as much as possible (something I've worked on personally), and Doc pretty much has the English language mastered. There are a few head-scratchers, sure... "spirited" is the one that always gets me. A waffle board is pretty universally understood as a goalie's blocker pad. Give me a guy who can describe the same small plays in different ways any day over a boring announcer who simply says "Bergeron to Marchand to Lucic to Chara."

I'm not sure what the gripes about "half-wall," "saucer pass," and "50-50 battle" is all about - those are just basic hockey terms.

In the later years it was Wednesday on CTV and Saturday on CBC. I grew up in Carthage and we watched Sat nights on CKWS CH 11, Kingston and Wed nights on CJOH, CH 13,8 & 6, Ottawa; what ever one would come in on the antenna that night.

I happen to like the simplistic explanations of J. R. on the plays and goals after the game. He has the experience and does a real good job. Mike M.,I, could do without, however.
