My LG just a few minutes ago pushed an update to user and policy agreements. I can't remember what the original was, but it seemed to separate out many of the most problematic behaviors and ask for individual authorization to enable them. Seems they are feeling the backlash to at least some degree.

But, of course, it is difficult to take them seriously that any real change is occurring. For example, do they still "own the screen" and are they still retaining the right to hand over any data they want to any party they want, including for basic government or law enforcement inquiries that lack a legal imperative?

The problem is not limited to just LG, nor just TVs.
And the solution does really seem to require legislation.

The solution is called GDPR and if you've ever done consulting for EU firms, you know it's a compliance nightmare.
