POTUS: It Can Happen Here Again

Re: POTUS: It Can Happen Here Again

one of my senators (I'll let you guess which one) held a public forum to listen to thoughts about the impeachment trial from constituents. Not a single person spoke in favor of the president or the GOP senators and their decision to block witnesses. No one came to defend the president against the "witch hunt". The general vibe was that everyone had lost faith in congress.

Good to hear that. And it might be possible that people will be even more put off if dump crows about it in the sotu address. If he were capable of a nuanced approach, he could get in his punches and still act more regretful than pompous. But that is far beyond him.

I'm not talking about his base or the liberal base. His base will buy any rationale so support what he or his lackeys in the Senate do, and committed libs will despise whatever he does or says. I'm talking about those voters who will determine the outcome this fall.

While it's good, assuming this was Angus the forum was probably self-selection by people who were always on to Dump. Now if Collins holds a townhall and the entire crowd calls her on her bullsh-t, that would be something to see.

Re: POTUS: It Can Happen Here Again

No, they did it right. Everyone knew the fix was in, and the Republicans wouldn't vote to convict. What we didn't know was the craven depths they would sink to in doing so.
I get where you're coming from. Yes, morally it was right for the House to uphold their duty, but what did it get us? But if anyone does not yet know the craven depths the republican party is willing to sink to, where have you been for the last 25-40 years? Or especially the last 10? Or 3? There is likely literally nothing they won't do now to bring about an authoritarian or fascist America. If Americans think they have seen some sketchy behavior out of what has become trump's republican party, wait and see what happens if (when?) it appears he's won again. I just don't see this entire process, going back to the first special Council investigations, as doing anything to help prevent a trump win.

I guess my mistake was expecting (hoping) the democrats will finally get it right. But WE better get it right. WE ordinary citizens better be getting off our butts this time around. WE have one election left to get this right.

Re: POTUS: It Can Happen Here Again

In Wisconsin, anyway, it won't take that many voters to flip the score. I'm sure they are being polled on the impeachment effect as we speak.

If you are in Wisconsin make sure you contact your local Democratic party leadership to find what you can do to best help offset the republican purge of voters, however that comes about. It took a lot of voter suppression for trump to win in 2016 and if we can prevent that, maybe WI is flipped back to some sort of sanity.

Your defeatist d i ckheadism would even make Scooby blush. Think of the implications if Dems didn't impeach.

First you send an unmistakable message to whistleblowers that they won't be heard even if they go through proper channels (their dept inspector general who has to report to Congress). So, forget about anybody else trying to expose criminal behavior from the inside.

Next, Chump would now have carte blanche to extort any ally receiving US aid for help with his re-election campaign. Ukraine's leadership would be over a barrel and would be forced to announce an investigation into the Bidens. And if you think the lamestream media would have followed up on all of this, don't make me laugh.

Once this was accomplished Chump would continue to send corrupt sycophant Rudy Giuliani around the world conducting a shadow foreign policy off the books and out of sight. Soon you'd see foreign investigations of Sanders, Warren, Buttigieg, etc.

Contrast that to what has happened. Entire treasonous operation has been exposed. No "investigation" of Dem presidential candidates from foreign countries desperate for US aid will be taken seriously even by Beltway Bobs of the press corps. Giuliani is now a pariah who has a date with a prison cell now that his co-conspirators have flipped on him already. Republican party and everyone in it is now beyond a doubt part of a treasonous money laundering cult. Cory Gardner is a dead man walking, and McSally and Collins are in deep sh it. Furthermore, Chump's popularity remains underwater and 50% of the country wanted him convicted. Since he skated the entirety of the left, from Sanders to Bloomberg and everyone in between is now united to kick his fat arse out of office.

I know for some of you "Dems in Disarray" is a comforting meme. Try to make sure it actually applies before you use it, or you are as mindless as the Republicans!

Re: POTUS: It Can Happen Here Again

Josh Marshall at TPM is arguing that by impeaching Pelosi got the Republicans in the Senate to write, produce, and perform a 2-week long campaign ad about why they shouldn't have power.

Pretty much.

Question is, do the people in their districts care?

Re: POTUS: It Can Happen Here Again

Because organizations hire people to show up and harass her?

Because she doesn't want to face real voters. Like Dump she needs a carefully screened audience.

The drawback of living in their alternative reality is cons can't function in front of the actual electorate. They need a safe space.

Because organizations hire people to show up and harass her? I don’t blame her one bit. The treatment she has received since Trump has been elected is completely ridiculous.

I intend to. I live in one of 10 counties nationwide that were identified by The Hill as predictive of who will win the 2020 pres election. From the website:

Sauk County has predicted the winner of Wisconsin’s electoral votes in nine of the past 10 presidential elections. Trump was the first Republican to carry the county in 28 years, when he won it by just 109 votes out of about 30,000 cast. He carried Wisconsin’s electoral votes by about eight-tenths of a percentage point.

Coming from a state that has soiled itself in recent years, it fees good to think a single person has a definite say in this. No lack of motivation to get out and do things I'm not naturally inclined to do, such as man phones and knock on doors.

What kind of a vibe are you getting now as opposed to this time in 2016? Are things any different?

I agree they should have impeached. I think the only thing they got out of 'doing the right thing' is to show the country just how corrupted out system of gov't has come. The Dumpsters are not hearing anything that hasn't been filtered. Listening to the arguments now and if they had live fact check bleeping everything that was false much of their argument would be silent. Arguing circularly in ways that, if you are following, actually argue against themselves. I want to reach thru the TV and collectively throttle the lot of them. ANd I want to know why the Dems aren't answering the Bvllsh1t argument about how this is an effort to overturn the election. NO. The a55hole did impeachable offenses. Period. Arguing it may effect an election has nothing to do with anything.

And I love the guy who offers opening prayers. Again another call out of those who have not kept to their oath, are not acting in good faith etc. THe dude is the bomb.

It’s actually the opposite. I think she’s happy to hear from real voters with real concerns, not people who have been stirred up by paid political organizations.

It’s ok for members of congress to yell “you lie” at the president during SOTU as long as said president is dem.

But angry constituents have to be hired by Soros, right?
Drew is getting boringly predictable

I'm not a very good read, Kep, since I'm mostly retired and hang out with a pretty liberal bunch. But I'd say the primary difference I feel is the level of awareness that things can go wrong fast. I recall an air of confidence in 2016, but with Ds I know, that confidence has been replaced with concern and urgency. After the midterms, there was a feeling that we might be on a correction path, but we had a supreme court election here last year that was a little similar to the 2016 result and deeply disappointing.

My bro, who lives in Falls Church, is even talking about coming out for an extended visit this fall and doing some door-to-door kind of work. We laughed that is a little different from him doing volunteer work for McCarthy in Boston in 1968.
