That may be so. If so, even a recession shouldn't shake his 37%. Assuming the Echo Chamber is that tight a seal, they'll never even know.

Correct. That 37% is baked in. It will never move. He could defecate on live TV and it wouldn't move.

People weren't changing their minds long before the National Disgrace took office last year. It probably started with Limbaugh's "lamestream media" line he started using back in the 90s.

Good starting line but you will have to admit it has gotten progressively worse every year. I don't think in 2006 this would have worked out so well with a number as high as 37% not wavering.

It got worse when other radio show hosts, and Fox News started echoing Limbaugh's chorus after seeing the size of his audience. They knew it was striking a chord with Limbaugh's Dittoheads, and took it from there. Then more people became entranced by the idea that the media was entirely skewed, and only certain reputable sources approved by Rush et al could trusted for the truth.

Why do people cheer for the home team when they employee rapists, abusers, drug addicts and worse? Why does no one in North Carolina care that UNC has been giving away fake diplomas on the public dime for decades? Why do racists in the South support All Dem Darkies in Der ES EE SEE? People want to win.

For once we can easily quantify this, and it doesn't look like you're right. Check out the bottom charts here. The green line is Dump while the grey is the labeled president. Dump's line is far more stable than any except LBJ's, whose is artificially stable because here are so few data points. To give the most recent example, Obama's has a difference of 20 points between global high and low over that interval. Dump's is just 10 points.

Dump is the not changing their mindest ever.

I think we're talking about different segments of the voting public. The approval/election floors used to be lower than they are now.

Oddly enough, the major pieces of policy that President Obama did- primarily the ACA- is one that people seem to really, really want to keep. All of that crap about voting in people who would over turn it, and it turns out once they figured out how it worked and helped them, they want it. Stunning.

Not sure why people keep railing on the two parties. Democrats represent what most Democrats really want. It's the republicans that one seem to not figure out what they are voting for- since they haven't done what you want them to be doing for about 40 years. We've been through this before.... You want a balanced budget, but keep voting for people who just want to cut taxes and spend more money killing other people. You want to end abortion, and R's come up with ideas that just get thrown out in court. One can go on....

YOU need to find the third party that represents YOU, and stop voting anti-Democrat for the sake of being anti-Democrat. Otherwise, we get the mess we all have right now.

BTW, the idea that it hasn't worked out- I think I speak for many here- we told you so.

So basically 35 is the effective zero mark, purely on the letter R? Again, possible, but if so that number has changed because Dubya fell all the way to 29.

I do see though that floor effects mean you have to suck far more to drop from 35 to 25 than from 45 to 35. As you go down it's as if the medium thickens (in so many ways) and becomes harder and harder to further compress.

Look at the worst things W did. Was he worse that Trump? Honestly, I don't think so - and this is coming from someone who voted for him in 2000 and against him in 2004. Trump routinely does things that would have had W in the mid- to upper-20s, but Trump sits pat at 35-37. The base of the party that would use reason to move away from someone like W has started falling for the "fake news" lines they're constantly hearing by from their Rush/Hannity/etc. shows more and more - repetition. So you have fewer critical thinkers in a party, and more people simply falling inline with the slanted news they're continually consuming. It moves the electoral and approval floors.
