Appears the other guy was not part of the swap because Russia considers him an espionage case. Russia said one for one or nothing so we took the deal. Probably the right move.

Yep and a lot of morons don’t seem to realize this. They’d rather leave her to rot if we can’t get the marine out

Won’t claim to have any knowledge on what constitutes a good prisoner exchange. I’m just glad we have an American home from Russia. It’s not like she was being detained in Canada. Stupid mistakes don’t deserve a decade in a fucking Russian penal colony.

Oh man, now the arms dealer is gonna go right back to arms dealing, because you know the people who want the arms will totally do business with the person that every Western government will have people watching like a hawk!

Also apparently his specialty is Russian-made arms, and after this past year there's just sooooooo many of those sitting around unused!

We see what Russian stuff can do. So who is going to buy that? There is one dead market. So this guy will be just buying- which is a decent way to lose money and bleed the soviets.

The troll farms would like us all to know that Britney Griner was an "America-hating basketball player" and Paul Whelan was a "hero Marine", or at least there are an awful lot of @Kyle98949932 and @Karen29498243 accounts on Twitter expressing those exact words for some reason. ;-)

There a lot more to the Whelan case that the trolls are conveniently ignoring. Whelan was actually thrown out of the Marines in 2008 after a court martial conviction on multiple counts of larceny, and made several visits to Russia of his own accord, including as far back as 2006 while deployed (which seems weird AF). While none of that necessarily adds up to the espionage Russia claims he was engaged in, there's definitely something "off" about his activities in that country. I suspect there's at least some sort of hustling, attempt to steal info for profit, or money laundering there that we aren't hearing about. Regardless, this hagiographic "Marine hero" narrative the botskis are pushing is obvious jingoistic BS.

Meanwhile, Griner made a dumb decision to use weed in a country where it's illegal, got caught, and was used as extortionary bait in a zero-sum game. If Biden walks away from the deal because he can't get Whelan or another American detainee as well, then he angers the base. It sounds like Putin specifically wanted to exchange Whelan for a captured Russian spy and the Biden admin wouldn't bite, probably because whatever Whelan was doing was not ordered by our government. So they don't consider trading an actual Russian agent for an "unsponsored" American one to be a fair trade.

Found with a thumbdrive containing classified information. Claims it was supposed to contain holiday photos that he hadn't looked at yet (???) and it was a setup. Also found with a LOT of cash on him. Again, it's still Russia, maybe it is a vast setup, but there's a lot more to it than "Marine Todd was in Soviet Russia to take pictures of churches and the illuminati jailed him".

The guy served twelve years in federal prison. Griner had another 9 years left (at least) in one of the worst prisons in Russia. She may have been killed.

This is the right call. I've been thinking about this all day. Originally I hated it. But this guy has been completely removed from his trade for twelve years and none of it was easy time. You make this deal every time.

You can either agree to the deal Putin is offering, get half of what you want, and pi55 off the 40-45% of voters who are in a cult and already weren't gonna vote for you anyway, or you can walk away from said deal with nothing and look like an incompetent, do-nothing boob to 100% of the country. Your call.

Fade- Griner didn’t have “weed”, she had carried “hashish oil”. Dumb to carry it over a border, sure, but not the weed people like to think of.

And both products are derived from the cannabis plant and contain THC, the actual illegal substance in question.

Just pointing out that the visual of weed is t what happened. That’s all.

edit- and until she says she had the thc oil, forgive me for not believing the Russians and their accusation. She was a pretty easy target for a plant.

You know if it's possible to not agree with the tradeoff and not be a RWNJ...

Of course it is. I was unsure about it early as well.

But whenever you find yourself on the side of the assholes, reconsider your opinions. Perhaps you don't change. But maybe you ought to?
