Wait, racists have feelings? Who would have known based on the vitriol they put out.

There’s a difference between people to the right of Kepler, and those who think peaceful protestors should be run over. Oh and those who “both sides” everything so they feel better about still grasping onto the R platform.

I don’t miss the latter

I'm sure any number of posters have, over time, made very slight shifts one way or another in their leanings on political subjects, but I don't think it's been too dramatic. The difference in the board is that many of those posters who offered an opinion more to the right than the Cafe majority, have simply disappeared. Maybe because they got tired of logging on, only to be called Nazi all day, in a "polite and reasonable" manner, of course.

Or, you know, Richard Nixon (created the EPA) and George Bush Senior (raised taxes when needed) would be Democrats in today's climate because the right has gone full whack-a- doodle.

It started with Reagan and has only accelerated since. My personal breaking point with the party was Caribou Barbie. And that was 13 years ago already.

I think you meant "left." Insofar as such a person hypothetically exists.

Being a "centrist moderate social libertarian" I clearly am far to the right of the "Cafe majority". While I was never what one would call a prolific poster, my input has dropped off over the past few years. It hasn't been the more vitriolic nature of the board but simply a change in my work hours limiting my ability to get on here as often. It's tough to argue one's point when it may be 3-4 days before you can reply or by arriving 2-3 days after the discussion has essentially ended (this post being a obvious example of the later). As far as being called a Nazi, I am reminded of Pierre Trudeau's response to Richard Nixon.

Nah. You can read the political leanings thread I revive every year. Several of us have move significantly left.

That’s been noticeable. It’s also happened in my family as GW Bush pushed many of them away from the R party for good.

some people are better left posting at other boards, where you’re not allowed to even say what your covid symptoms were or your lingering effects in fear of triggering the conservative snowflakes

Democrats may not be able to put the republican party out of business but maybe they'll do it to themselves. While I would hope the media would just stop giving trump oxygen I know that isn't going to happen. So the next best thing will be to give him a platform to launch the trump party (I even hope he names it that) because if we can get the republican vote split down the middle between the GOP and the trump party for an election cycle or two, neither party would survive beyond 4 years. And that would be sweeeeeeeet.

I graduated high school an indoctrinated Republican. I graduated college a Libertarian. By the time I left my first full-time job, I was a Democrat.

I know a lot of people who took a path like that.

They come out of the south or midwest where conservatism is ubiquitous.

They go to college and meet diverse people so the racism and religious f-ckwittery drop away. They become "socially liberal, fiscally conservative," so they get attracted to libertarianism. It's turbocharged if they are STEM males for whom libertarianism is a circle jerk.

Then they get out of school, mature, maybe get married and have kids and realize the world doesn't revolve around them and social responsibilities exist. So they abandon the libertarian cult for the Democrats.

Personal growth is good.

I think that kind of split is a sound reflection of where the American Right is. About 2/3 are Nazis and 1/3 are the olde-style Reaganite Plute scam. A formal Bull Moose break would give us roughly:

.55 Democrats
.30 Nazis
.15 Plutes

I think most of the undercard would run either a P or an N, not both, so it might not significantly increase the Dem Congressional majorities, but it would obviously cripple the Right for national office.

I'll take what I can get.

Why would Trump start his own party made up of only 46% of his supporters, when he can just stay in the GOP and keep the whole enchilada?

This is pretty accurate for me except that I never went hardcore libertarian. I was too immersed in studies and then career in my 20s to be too deliberate about exploring my political beliefs. When I re-awoke a decade later, I was a bit surprised to discover that I was a liberal. Or, at least, I somehow happened to agree with the liberal position on each issue.

Oh - and it didn’t require kids for me, either - those wouldn’t come along for another 15 years.

This is kind of me. But I also fall under the umbrella of being a Millenial who is just now finding a secure financial footing after barely scraping by since graduating 12 years ago. So financial hardship really opened my eyes to the need for social services/safety nets.

Dems already have half the Plutes, may as well take as many of the rest as we can.

It's tricky to "take their money and still vote against them." I would much prefer to see the Plutes permanently alienate the derps while we shun them. I don't want the droppings of their heists, especially since it's like cocaine to elected officials and irresistibly corrupting. I want to put them in the cages at the border and claw back all that theft.
