BTW Don Julio 70...3 fingers and a few cubes and the world is just right. Good thing I bought a bottle in Mexico before the world ended last year saved me like $30.

Which beer
which tequila
which rum

are we talking like High Life, Cuervo, and Bacardi? Or so you like the good stuff like aged rums, anejo, and almost anything but high life?

I am a snob in all three.

Belgians / trappists / Ayinger / bocks

Anejo agaves / blanco agaves

Sipping rums / ports

Lol

hey, I won’t look down at someone for what they drink. That ain’t my style anymore. I am happy drink a silo of Miller lite at a game or Summer shandy at the cabin. I wouldn’t turn down a good cosmo either if it was offered.

Three last drinks:
Knob Creek Boulevardier
Angels Envy rye neat
a really, really fucking good margarita

I just can't get into the bourbon / rye / whiskey / scotch family. I am perfectly willing to bankrupt myself on the good stuff when I like it. I just cannot develop a taste for it.

Ugh I never liked Angel's Envy...the bourbon was too sweet so I assume the rye is too. I need my bourbon to BURN! (also why Pappy is overrated)

Any version of Knob Creek is good and a good value. Hell Evan Williams is cheap as heck and a good value as well. I remember when you could get Buffalo Trace for like $19 and that was a steal. Then the hipsters realized they make Blanton's so they started buying it and jacked the price up.

Best part about being a bartender (and being friends with bartenders) is I have tried most of the stuff out there so I dont need to be a "price tag whore". Most of the people I know paying $50 for a bottle of "good" whiskey or bourbon have no idea there is better stuff at half the price.

I enjoy myself some bourbon / whisk(e)y but my co-workers have made me feel shame in that Makers Mark and Woodford Reserve are on the low end of their tastes.

They're Blanton, 1792, and Jefferson Ocean drinkers.

I... have a lot of bourbon to sample in my life still.

*furiously takes notes*

I'm coming to you for bourbon recommendations.

That is me and spiced rum. Cant do it. Same with Gin. Hell only hangover I have ever had was from Vodka cause I was literally out of everything else.

To me I can only drink stuff I dont have to mix. I used to drink Jack and Cokes but then I quit pop. Irish Whiskey I dont mix. Scotch worth drinking you don't mix. Tequila worth drinking you don't use in Margaritas. (yuck)

Beer has never been my thing but in the summer I can partake. Always makes me feel bloated to hell.

I haven't really liked mixed drinks since I left high school, when it was 7&7s and Cuba libres.

TBH liquor may be quicker but I don't particularly care for it. I actually like the act of drinking and tasting, not just flying (though that's nice too), and beer is the perfect combination for me. 2 pints to enjoy, 4 to get serious, 6 to forget.

Blanton's is just higher end Buffalo Trace. It is good but overpriced and vastly overrated. (although it saved the bourbon industry) I used to drink it for free at a bar in Minneapolis. Cool bottle but save your money.

I buy 1792. Total Wine usually has it at a good price. Worth it every time.

Jefferson Ocean is solid but I aint buying it I have had a lot of the other Jeffersons as well. You can enjoy the heck out of their lower end stuff for good prices.

Never apologize for liking Woodford. It isnt my fave but it is definitely doable and again a great friggin value. I have seen the 1.75L for like $40-50.

Makers I cant stand unless I am flat broke. Something bugs me about it.

If you want some solid non-Kentucky ones Oregon Spirit is usually solid priced and good as is Paddleford Creek and Wellington Creek. If you make it to Minnesota Douglas and Todds is good though the price just got jacked up.

I like Crown Royal and I ain't spending any more.

Oh man I remember drinking Crown...mixes perfect with anything sweet. Canadian was my jam for a loooooooong time.

aparch,

When the Pandemic ends (assuming my spot re-opens which it sounds like it might!) if you ever make it to the TC area I will introduce you to some bartenders who really know their crap. They all taught me and can give you the best breakdowns ever. (and your bill will be very very...friendly ;^) ) I never liked real bourbon until I met them and they explained a lot to me.

Best advice I ever got was there are the bottles you show and the bottles you drink. Blanton's is a bottle you show on your bar and bust out on special occasions. It is pretty mediocre if it is your regular drink but once in a while it is nice. Woodford, Basil, Angel's Envy, Evan Williams even 1792 if you get it at the right price are the ones you pour 2 fingers of every night and it never gets old. To me that is what matters. To the "Price Tag Whores" it is about bragging...I got a buddy like that. His bar has tons of high end stuff and he lets me try all of it. Then he gets mad when I pick a mid range bottle and pour a big drink. He likes to brag, I like to drink.

While I was giving Kepler crap...I never actually shame anyone for anything they drink. One of my best friends drinks Bud Light and Patron and that is literally it. It makes him happy and that is what matters. I like drinking sparkling wine...like I care if anyone mocks me for it.

It's all about the value!
When Blanton's was at about $40 a bottle I drank it routinely. The price shot up and I can't remember the last time I've had any. Same thing happened Redbreast (Irish Whiskey). You used to be able to get Heaven Hill Bottled in Bond for <$20 and that was a serious value. It's now about $50 and way out of my value range. Heaven Hill Green Label is a tasty bourbon that is as good or better than Evan Williams and goes for only about $13. It would replace EW in my liquor cabinet as the mixer bourbon but it is too hard to get since it is only available in KY. I would add that Evan Williams Single Barrel is worth the extra $$$ IMO. Right now, the only bottle that I'm willing to shell out significant cash for is Elijah Craig Barrel Proof. It should be renamed as Elijah Craig Barrel Proof of the Existence of God!

And one more thing.....While I agree that one one's choice of their drink should be based on whatever they enjoy, sparkling wines? : )

Angels envy rue is the only $80 bottle I always keep at home and don’t have a second thought buying. It’s perfection.

knob Creek for my money is the best whiskey on the market though for value. There isn’t a thing they do that’s even average (haven’t tried the flavored stuff yet). And they do it for under $30 a bottle. Just unreal. Ditto for a lot of what high west does. 1792 cask is almost as good. For like $45 you get an excellent bourbon AND it’s 120+ proof.

I’m with you on the price tag. I go right by Blanton’s. I will never understand the hype. I thought it was a mixer at best. And that was when it was $50 a bottle and you could find it.

Ocean is a fucking rip off and anyone who drinks it isn’t drinking it because they like it, they’re drinking it because it’s expensive. I’ve had almost every Jefferson’s under $100. PASS.

Woodford used to be my go to but something changed over the last few years. They’ve taken on a weird almost cherry cough syrup note. I still buy it but try to stick with double oaked on sale. Maker’s Mark is perfectly cromulent.

Oh god, wild turkey. I forgot how good that stuff is. Rare Breed is a very special bourbon.
