Source? Those "decently high odds" are currently 69% in favor.

Ah. I thought it was 60/40 Democrats, but I haven’t looked in like a week or two. I like 69/31 better. So, assume we retake the Senate. What’s the endgame? Are we not in agreement that it’s inevitable the GOP will regain a trifecta themselves in the future? Maybe the reasoning is that it will be so far down the road that all of the policies passed in the meantime will be here to stay anyways?

It wont even have to be that long. In 2016 every GOP voter wanted ObamaCare repealed...until in 2018 it almost happened and the people realized what that actually meant. (they were screwed) Then a Pandemic hit and it got even worse...

It is time for the Dems to be Santa Claus again. Start giving things back to the people. Make the GOP actively have to take it back if they get power and watch the backlash. The amount of voting reforms alone should be a step in the right direction. I dont see even the 6-3 Handmaid's Tale Court striking down legit election reforms if they dont run afoul of the Constitution. (like say election Day Holiday, registration reforms...etc.)

The end game is to do what you can while you can, and worry about the GOP later. Those are the rules the GOP plays by, so the Dems better play by the same rules or they'll get run roughshod over for eternity.

Funny how no one asks the GOP what the end game is by ramming through ACB or not even holding a vote on Garland or doing literally nothing to hold Trump accountable. It's just accepted that they get to do whatever they want. But woe to the Dems that want to fight back.

There is no consistency in partisan politics.

The Christian Right being deeply hypocritical opportunists without an ounce of sincere spiritual feeling is very consistent.

The Thumpers are just another righty con. They have as much to do with god as the Club for Growth has to do with economics. They are a fig leaf to hide a fist of sheer cynical power politics.

This is a terrible argument and it is why the government has been ratcheted to the far right for 40 years despite the people moving to the left. It is a combination of Reagan PTSD, empty lessons about soft power and optics we all learned on the academic conveyor belt, and being too clever by half. Let me tell you the secret of the last half century:

The Right gets into power. It jams everything it can down our throat in front while it sucks out the nation's treasure with its razor blood funnel from behind. It never compromises, it never has qualms, it never hesitates. It is a criminal enterprise working with efficiency and everything -- principles, rhetoric, tactics, strategy -- advances the same single objective: destroy all opposition to the whims of the rich.

They destroy the country so, eventually, the Left gets into power. It hems and haws. It argues about the correct gender and racial composition of the deck chairs. It opens negotiations with its final offer so as not to seem petty or extreme. And it finds the voter who is just one hairbreadth from switching and then pitches every policy to her. And so all it accomplishes is saving the country just enough so the Right can then rape it again.

No more. I want to govern this country farther to the Left than it has ever even considered. The next time I hold the White House and Congress I am first taking the Courts, next expanding the Senate with so many new blue states it never falls into Nazis hands again, and then ending all vote suppression so that all subsequent elections will be truly democratic. That brings us up to 4pm on January 21st. After that, and only after that, do I start on policy.

We need to end the Right. It is a cabal of rich as-sholes we will tax out of existence and a massive army of duped, vicious, incompetent failures we need to contain, monitor, and upon the least violent act neutralize. We need to treat them exactly like they treated blacks for the last 150 years. Rednecks are the new n-ggers.

This country should be Denmark with better weather and less attractive men. And with enough money that we can send people to other planets and cure major diseases rather than, I dunno, what do the Danes do, underwrite phallic art? This should be the greatest, healthiest, most free (for everyone!), most democratic, most scientifically advanced, most humane, most fun country on earth, not the authoritarian dungeon every nation run by conservatives inevitably becomes.

I made a very similar post a few weeks ago after RBG died.

Yeah, I’m not arguing we govern from the center. I’m quite comfortable in saying I’m as far left as anyone on here. But, I’m also not a fucking moron who forgot who is currently serving in Congress. You govern with the hand you’re given. Assuming we gain the trifecta, we pass what’s passable, and that’s a lot of sh-t. Right now, Joe Manchin isn’t doing any of the sh-t you’re suggesting. Neither is Sinema, or Tester. What do we do in the meantime? Yeah, the 4 Democratic Senators we may gain from DC and PR may make it 54-50 or 55-49 in due time. Maybe enough D Senators then are around abolish the filibuster. If not, you got budget reconciliation. You shove as much progressive sh-t that can be tied to the budget into a bill, while saving money over 10 years by taxing the sh-t out of the rich for most, if not all of it. You do that twice if possible before 2022 elections, and if Democrats hold the Senate then (I foresee them holding the House for a while thanks to suburban women switching parties), try abolishing the filibuster again, or keep pushing through massive reconciliation bills. I mean yeah, if we had 60 Kamala Harris or Elizabeth Warren-style Senators in the Senate, we’d be golden. We don’t.

So, had there been any update on how FLOTUS, Hope Hicks and Spokeperson Barbie are feeling?

They were aging out, anyway. Don't worry. They're fungible.

Nobody wants it?? Hello??? Of COURSE people want it. That's the problem.

As somebody says in the Comments, nobody who wants Civil War has ever been in a war.

The most hard core anti-Dumper I know is a naturalized citizen who grew up in Yugoslavia and lived through the Balkan War.

There was an article posted on here like a year ago...might have been by Kepler. Basically it discussed how the GOP in the 70s realized that taking things away was not a winning strategy, especially as part of their two pronged assault to cut taxes and steal everything. If the Dems were promising to give everything away the GOP had to find a way to make it seem like they were doing it too...even though they were going to cut taxes to the point that we can barely fund buying a stamp.

I have said this a dozen times and I will say it 2 dozen more...assuming things break the right way (i.e. get back the Senate and the Presidency) they need to govern like there is only 4 years to save the country. No more placating. They need to set their agenda and do it. Try negotiating but basically do what Pelosi has done with the second stimulus and set a hard line and be done with it. And every time something passes and Mark Meadows or Gym Jordan cry about it remind them "Elections Have Consequences" and walk away.

I think you are wrong. Manchin will always be a problem but Sinema has nothing to fear (nor will Kelly when he joins) because Arizona has no one of value to run against her right now. (and well is shifting Blue) She isnt up for re-election until what 2024?

I think you underestimate how big the shift will be in the Senate if the Dems take it back. It wont go to Kepler's extreme but unless it is 50/50 Manchin is going to be the outlier. (and given cover) Hell if the Dems can somehow get to 52-53 those 3 become the Left's version of Collins and Murkowski.

For sure. Completely agree about how Dems should govern SHOULD they retake the trifecta. Ram the liberal agenda down their throats, as much as our current legislative makeup of individual members allow. I’ll try to hunt down that article.
